Four teenagers from Kerikeri, New Zealand, are making waves in the music scene after their band, Bandwidth Riot, secured first place at the recent Smokefreerockquest. Since this significant victory in July 2023, the band has been invited to perform at a series of high-profile events throughout Northland, sharing the stage with well-known New Zealand artists, including the iconic band Hello Sailor.

Formed just last summer, Bandwidth Riot is comprised of lead guitarist Luc Lawler, vocalist Freddy Jarman, bass player Alastor Fairhurst, and drummer and backing vocalist Jack Laird. Their journey began earlier this year when the four friends decided to come together to compete in the youth music competition. “Earlier this year we needed a Rockquest band, and Jack, Freddy, Al, and I started jamming and playing some songs,” Lawler explained.

The success of Bandwidth Riot at the Smokefreerockquest has not only boosted their visibility but also provided them with invaluable opportunities to connect with seasoned musicians and industry professionals. Their performances have been met with enthusiasm from audiences, marking a promising start for the young band.

With their unique sound and youthful energy, Bandwidth Riot is well-positioned to make a significant impact in New Zealand’s music landscape. As they prepare for upcoming performances, including shows with Hello Sailor, they are eager to continue building their reputation and honing their craft.

As they embark on this exciting chapter, the band remains grounded, focusing on their passion for music while navigating the challenges of the industry. The journey of Bandwidth Riot serves as an inspiring testament to the power of youth creativity and collaboration in the arts. Their story is one that resonates with aspiring musicians everywhere, proving that with talent and determination, great things can happen.
