The Central Otago Toastmasters club has officially been re-established, with its charter granted in late October 2023. The club aims to provide local residents with access to public speaking and leadership training, eliminating the need for members to travel to Queenstown or Wānaka for these opportunities.

Sarah Fairbairn, president of the Central Otago branch, expressed her satisfaction with the club’s chartering, noting that it has been a long-awaited development. Previously, Alexandra had a Toastmasters club that closed due to insufficient membership. In response to community interest, discussions on social media platforms highlighted a demand for Toastmasters programs in the area.

The initiative to re-establish the club began with a “speech craft” course, offering a fast-paced introduction to Toastmasters for interested locals. This critical step helped revive interest and participation in the organization, leading to regular meetings starting in February 2023. With the official charter now in place, the club can provide enhanced resources tailored to the individual goals of its members.

Toastmasters is renowned for its focus on public speaking; however, the scope of the club has evolved. Today, it offers training not only in traditional public speaking but also in leadership skills applicable in various contexts, including podcasts and social media presentations. Fairbairn highlighted that members can also participate in a humorous format of Toastmasters, where speeches are scored based on their comedic value, fostering a light-hearted environment for learning.

The club meets every fortnight at Elim Church in Alexandra at 17:30. Interested individuals are encouraged to attend and learn more about joining the club and the resources available to them. The revival of the Central Otago Toastmasters club represents a significant opportunity for personal and professional development within the community, reflecting the increasing demand for effective communication skills in today’s society.
