Schoolchildren Celebrate as Paralympian Holly Robinson Visits
A recent initiative by the Bupa Foundation, in collaboration with Paralympics New Zealand and NZ Landcare Trust, culminated in an inspiring visit to St Mary’s School in Southland. The competition, titled “Where is my healthy place?”, encouraged schoolchildren across the country to submit photos representing their personal healthy spaces. The winner would receive a visit from a Paralympian and the chance to participate in a tree-planting activity.
Nine-year-old Eden Barbour emerged as the winner with a stunning photograph taken from the summit of East Peak, showcasing the breathtaking views of Southland after a challenging climb. Eden was unaware of her achievement until earlier this month, when she was surprised by the presence of Paralympic star Holly Robinson during a school assembly. The encounter left Eden “speechless,” marking a significant moment in her young life.
Inspiration and Engagement
Holly Robinson, who has a storied career in athletics, is a gold medalist in javelin from the 2020 Tokyo Paralympics, as well as a silver medalist from the 2016 Rio Games and a bronze medalist for shot put at the 2024 Paris Games. During her visit, Robinson engaged with the students in a question-and-answer session, sharing her journey and experiences in the world of elite sports. Following the assembly, she joined the children in planting native trees, further emphasizing the importance of community and environmental stewardship.
Eden expressed her joy at winning the competition, stating, “It was awesome to meet such a remarkable athlete and experience it with my friends.” She highlighted her excitement in wearing Robinson’s bronze medal and holding the shot put used in competitions. “The kids were all really excited; you can see it on their faces. They’re smiling, they’re excited, they just want to listen and hear,” she added, reflecting on the collective joy of the occasion.
Giving Back to the Community
Robinson shared her perspective on the importance of giving back, stating, “As someone who competed in some of the biggest events in the world and is living my dream, moments where I can give back are equally as valuable.” She recounted her own inspiration as a young athlete listening to Danyon Loader, a New Zealand swimmer and Olympic champion, which motivated her to pursue her dreams. “To be able to talk to the kids and give them a little piece they can take into their own lives is a really special thing,” Robinson noted.
Pedro Sanchez, managing director of Bupa New Zealand, praised the event’s success, emphasizing the engagement and enthusiasm displayed by both the athletes and the students. “It’s great to bring NZ Landcare Trust and Paralympics New Zealand together to create such a meaningful day for the kids. The athletes are so generous with their time and really make a lasting impact,” he stated.
The event not only celebrated the achievements of athletes like Holly Robinson but also inspired the next generation to appreciate health, sports, and environmental conservation. Through initiatives like this, communities can foster a deeper connection between young people and inspiring role models, highlighting the valuable role of sports in personal development and community engagement.
