National Thoroughbred Week Invites Public Inside Racing Industry

The thoroughbred horse racing industry is opening its doors to the public with the launch of the inaugural National Thoroughbred Week (NTW), running from today until November 24, 2023. This initiative offers New Zealanders a unique opportunity to explore the inner workings of the racing world, including stable visits and interactions with horses.

NTW was established by a volunteer steering committee made up of representatives from both Australia and New Zealand. Co-founder and director of Kick Up, Vicky Leonard, highlighted the significance of the event. She stated that the initiative aims to shift the narrative surrounding horse welfare, often driven by misconceptions from those who have never experienced the industry firsthand. “As an industry, we have a great deal to be proud of – the care, professionalism, and people behind it,” Leonard noted.

Exclusive Tours and Events

During NTW, several locations will host organized tours. For instance, Westbury Stud in Karaka will conduct two-hour guided tours from 1:00 PM to 3:00 PM on November 20, November 21, and November 24. Visitors will have the chance to see foals and yearlings, explore the facilities, and meet retired racehorses.

On November 22, the Pukekohe Park will offer structured tours for registered guests on Counties Cup Day. This experience will provide insights into the operations of a race club and the dedication involved in horse care. Additionally, the New Zealand Horse Ambulance Trust will present its purpose-built ambulance, equipped for critical care of injured horses.

Two prominent equine centers, Haunui Farm and Byerley Park, will also welcome the public on November 23 from 10:00 AM to 12:00 PM. Attendees at Haunui Farm can witness a parade featuring mares and their foals, while Byerley Park will offer a tour of its racing stable, detailing the daily routines required to maintain racehorses in peak physical condition.

Building Community Understanding

The chief executive of New Zealand Thoroughbred Racing, Matt Ballesty, emphasized the importance of transparency within the industry. “NTW is a chance for the public to see the care and passion of our industry in action,” he stated. The week aims to foster genuine understanding of the thoroughbred life in New Zealand and highlight the role of racing and breeding in local communities.

“This initiative not only creates jobs and sustains businesses but also brings people together through a shared love of horses,” Ballesty added. By opening their gates, the industry hopes to inspire future generations, whether they aspire to be jockeys, veterinarians, farriers, or simply horse enthusiasts.
