A Christmas tree and gift donation area has been established at the reception of the Waimate District Council on Queen Street, allowing the public to contribute gifts for children in need. This initiative, led by Mayoress Lyn Stringer, aims to ensure that every child in the community can experience joy on Christmas Day, especially during the ongoing cost-of-living crisis.

Many families are currently facing significant financial strain, making it challenging to purchase gifts for their children. Stringer highlighted the importance of community support, stating, “The capacity for our community to give is phenomenal.” She expressed gratitude to last year’s donors and encouraged continued participation this year.

The initiative specifically seeks gifts for babies, toddlers, and children up to the age of 15. “The gifts do not have to be big or expensive. Every little bit helps put a smile on a child’s face on Christmas morning,” Stringer noted. The message is clear: “Anyone can fall on hard times, especially at the moment, and we want to ensure every child gets something on Christmas Day.”

Supporting Local Families in Need

Community Link, the organization tasked with distributing the gifts, collaborates with various social services to identify families that require assistance. Last year, approximately 100 children received gifts through this program, providing them with a brighter holiday season.

To participate, community members are encouraged to donate brand new, unwrapped gifts, which can be dropped off at the Waimate District Council reception until 16:00 on December 5, 2023. This initiative not only supports those in need but also fosters a sense of unity within the community as residents come together to uplift one another during the festive season.

The Waimate District Council and Mayoress Lyn Stringer are committed to making this Christmas special for children who may otherwise go without. As the holiday season approaches, the community is reminded of the power of generosity and the impact it can have on the lives of local families.
