Auckland FC Aims for Goal Surge in A-League Season
Auckland FC forward Guillermo May is determined to surpass the team’s impressive scoring record from last season as they prepare for their upcoming match against Brisbane Roar on March 3, 2024. Despite not yet scoring this season, May believes the team will be more productive in front of goal, building on their previous tally of 50 goals, the fastest in the league’s 20-year history to reach that milestone.
May, the leading scorer for Auckland in their inaugural season, acknowledges a sense of “anxiety” regarding his current goal drought, having started three matches and come off the bench once without finding the net. While he admits he needs to “train the precision” of his shots, he emphasizes his commitment to the team’s success over individual accolades. “If the team wins and I don’t score, I prefer to be on a winning team than be the scoring man,” he stated.
Team Dynamics and Improved Play
The addition of new players Sam Cosgrove and Lachlan Brook has positively impacted Auckland’s game. May notes that the team is playing with greater cohesion and creativity this season, which he believes will lead to more scoring opportunities. “We are playing with the ball better than last season, and that is helping us to create better chances. It’s easier this year for us to score than before,” May explained.
As of now, Auckland FC holds the top position in the A-League table, a spot they maintained for much of the previous season. May emphasizes the importance of sustaining their performance, recognizing the competitive landscape. “The four teams we’ve faced have been competitive, and they will continue to push for top positions if they maintain their current form,” he said.
May’s confidence in the team is bolstered by their training regimen and match preparations. “I’m confident of our team, of our competition, of how we are training and how we are performing,” he remarked.
Personal Goals and Future Prospects
The 27-year-old forward is also on his journey back from injury. He describes the process as variable, sometimes feeling in rhythm while at other times struggling with fitness. “I’m getting back to the pace, the rhythm, the fitness,” he shared. May holds high expectations for himself, focusing on facilitating scoring opportunities and enhancing his overall contributions. “In my role, it’s more about getting the connections between lines, trying to assist in scoring, and creating good chances,” he stated.
Looking ahead, May is eager to improve his statistics and contribute significantly to the team’s success. “I push every day to be better, and I want to upgrade my stats. I’m going to be better; I’m trying to be,” he affirmed.
Auckland FC’s next challenge against Brisbane Roar presents another opportunity for May to find his scoring touch and help the team secure another win in their quest for an even more prolific season.
