Fashion designer Paul Costelloe, known for his long-standing relationship with Princess Diana, passed away at the age of 80. His family confirmed the news on Saturday, stating he died peacefully in London, surrounded by his wife and seven children following a brief illness.

Legacy in Fashion and Connection to Royalty

Costelloe was appointed as Diana’s personal designer in 1983, shortly after launching his own brand, Paul Costelloe Collections. Their collaboration continued until Diana’s tragic death in a car accident in Paris in 1997. Costelloe’s designs were characterized by elegance and a unique aesthetic that resonated with the Princess’s public persona.

Born in Dublin in 1945, Costelloe honed his skills at the prestigious Chambre Syndicale de la Haute Couture in Paris. He then moved to Milan, where he worked as a designer for the luxury department store La Rinascente. His time in New York marked the establishment of his own label before he finally settled in London, where his partnership with Diana flourished.

Throughout his career, Costelloe developed a diverse range of collections, including womenswear, menswear, bags, homeware, and jewellery. He was invited to showcase his work at London Fashion Week in its inaugural year in 1984 and returned in September this year to present his latest spring-summer creations.

A Tribute to a Fashion Icon

In a statement, Simon Harris, Ireland’s Deputy Prime Minister, paid tribute to Costelloe, stating, “Paul led a remarkable life as a leading figure in Irish, UK and international fashion and business for decades. He built a hugely successful business through incredible talent, discipline, and an unwavering commitment to quality.” Harris emphasized that Costelloe’s journey represents a significant success story for Ireland.

Costelloe’s influence extended beyond his designs; he was a mentor and inspiration to many in the fashion industry. His commitment to craftsmanship and quality has left a lasting impact on both his clients and the broader fashion community.

As the fashion world mourns the loss of this iconic designer, Costelloe’s legacy will undoubtedly continue to inspire future generations of designers and fashion enthusiasts alike.
