Arrowtown’s Lakes District Museum Launches 30×30 Art Exhibition
The Lakes District Museum in Arrowtown is set to unveil its biennial 30×30 exhibition, featuring approximately 140 artworks created by 79 artists. The opening night is scheduled for tomorrow, starting at 18:00, and the exhibition will continue until February 1, 2024. Each artwork adheres to the 30×30 cm size requirement, allowing for a diverse display of creativity.
Jane Peasey, the museum’s director, highlighted that this year’s exhibition includes a wide variety of mediums, from traditional paintings to mixed media and bronze sculptures, along with unique pieces such as Jasmine Clark’s woven wire art. For the first time, all artworks will be available for immediate purchase on a “cash and carry” basis, meaning that the exhibition will evolve as pieces are sold.
Peasey expressed enthusiasm about the exhibition’s popularity, stating, “It’s a really popular one and great for our visitors — because of the size, they can take them with them and they fit in suitcases.” This practicality appeals to both locals and tourists, making it easier for them to acquire art that they can transport easily.
The exhibition showcases works by both amateur and professional artists, which contributes to the affordability of the pieces. “I love that anyone can submit — amateur artists who paint in their garage have a chance to be on a gallery wall,” Peasey added. This inclusivity encourages community engagement and fosters a vibrant local arts scene.
As part of the exhibition, the museum will take a commission from each sale, with the proceeds earmarked for upgrading gallery lighting in the coming years. The opening night is supported by local businesses, including Mt Edward Wines and Whitestone Cheese, enhancing the event’s community spirit.
Additionally, the Arrowtown Creative Arts Society will unveil the new Arrowtown Arts Trail during the opening. This initiative aims to guide tourists to various local artists and studios, further enriching the cultural experience in and around Arrowtown.
With its focus on local talent and community involvement, the 30×30 exhibition promises to be a highlight of the artistic calendar. Visitors can expect an evening filled with creativity and the opportunity to take home unique pieces of art.
