Mouldy Meals Controversy at Haeata Community Campus Sparks Debate
Students at Haeata Community Campus experienced a concerning incident when they were served mouldy mince meals as part of a government-funded school lunch programme. The meals, provided by Compass Group, were reportedly consumed by some students before they noticed the food was spoiled. The New Zealand Food Safety authority indicated that it is likely the meals had not been properly refrigerated and were inadvertently re-served to students alongside fresh meals on March 27, 2024.
Principal Peggy Burrows disputed these claims, stating there is video evidence showing that the meals were not leftover from a previous delivery. During a segment on Morning Report, Burrows maintained that her intention was not political but rather to highlight a “systems failure.” She emphasized her gratitude for the school’s access to the lunch programme, asserting, “I’ve never been a critic, simply pointed and highlighted when issues have arisen.”
Burrows expressed her disappointment with the conclusion drawn by food safety investigators, which suggested that the meals had been left unrefrigerated. “The meals on Thursday last week were delivered at 09:30, and we have video footage documenting the delivery. The person from Compass Group returned at 14:00 to collect the containers,” Burrows explained. She mentioned that a staff member checks the facilities each morning to ensure everything is in order.
The investigation continues, with Vince Arbuckle, deputy director-general of New Zealand Food Safety, stating that a team is currently onsite at the school examining the situation. “We have considered all possible causes,” Arbuckle noted. “We think it is more than likely that the affected meals had been delivered on March 27, remained at the school without refrigeration, and were accidentally re-served to students alongside fresh meals delivered on Monday.”
In response to the situation, Paul Harbey, a spokesperson for the School Lunch Collective, which oversees Compass Group, confirmed that one of the heated containers used for the meals was left at the school on the original delivery date. “Records show nine Cambro boxes of the savoury mince and potatoes meal were delivered, but only eight were returned. One box remained at ambient temperatures at the school since that date,” Harbey stated.
The Ministry for Primary Industries (MPI) indicated that the issue likely stemmed from human error at the school. On the day of the complaint, 15 other schools received meals from the same distribution centre, and no other complaints were reported.
Burrows has indicated her willingness to release the footage that documents the delivery, pending legal clearance. She expressed confusion over how the investigators could arrive at a different conclusion than what she observed. “I cannot understand how three investigators can hear what I heard, and then that conclusion is made later in the day,” she said.
The unfolding situation raises important questions about food safety protocols and the management of school lunch programmes, particularly as schools increasingly rely on external providers for meal services. As the investigation progresses, the focus remains on ensuring the safety and well-being of students receiving these meals.
