A team of young athletes successfully raised $5,500 to fund their upcoming participation in a national basketball tournament in Palmerston North. Following their second-place finish in the South Island tournament earlier this year, the team organized a quiz night at Archer Stadium, which drew significant community support.

The event featured a raffle with donated prizes and a bake sale, attracting a packed audience. Coach Sean Heanue expressed his delight at the turnout and the community’s backing. “It went really well, actually. We had a great turnout and a lot of support,” Heanue stated. “We couldn’t do it without them. There were people there who probably weren’t even invested in basketball or related to the kids, so it’s good to see all the support.”

The fundraising efforts exceeded the team’s initial goal, providing a boost as they prepare for the tournament. With just three training sessions left before their departure, Heanue emphasized the importance of fine-tuning their strategies and studying their opponents. “We’re just looking at the other teams we’re playing,” he remarked.

The team is set to leave for Palmerston North on March 3, 2024, where they will compete against various teams, including a highly anticipated rematch against Greymouth, who defeated them in the South Island finals. With the fundraising behind them, excitement is palpable among the players.

“Everyone’s really eager to go,” Heanue noted. “We can’t wait to get up there and play. It’s always fun to participate in the tournament and travel with friends. You don’t get to do something like this too often.”

As the young athletes prepare for this significant opportunity, their commitment and the community’s support highlight the spirit of teamwork and determination that defines their journey.
