Qatar Engages at UNIDO’s 21st General Conference in Riyadh
The State of Qatar actively participated in the 21st session of the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO) General Conference, known as the Global Industry Summit 2025, held in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, from November 23 to 27, 2023. The event convened senior government officials, representatives from member states, international business leaders, and the UNIDO Director-General.
Qatar’s Commitment to Sustainable Development
The Qatari delegation was led by H E Mohammed bin Hassan Al-Malki, Undersecretary of the Ministry of Commerce and Industry. During his address, Al-Malki highlighted the essential role of UNIDO in addressing current global challenges. He underscored that industry is vital for enhancing international cooperation and fostering sustainable development initiatives.
Al-Malki reaffirmed Qatar’s strong commitment to UNIDO’s mission, particularly in promoting sustainable industrial growth in developing and least-developed countries. He praised the initiatives featured in UNIDO’s 2024 Annual Report, which includes significant efforts in technology transfer, investment promotion, public-private partnerships, and clean energy innovation. These initiatives are crucial to advancing global actions aimed at eradicating poverty and hunger.
Furthermore, the Undersecretary expressed Qatar’s eagerness to expand collaboration with UNIDO in key areas such as industrial policy advisory services, digital transformation, and human-capital development. He noted a recent agreement between the Qatar Fund for Development and UNIDO, aimed at enhancing the organization’s capacity in innovation, advisory services, clean technology, and energy efficiency. This agreement underscores Qatar’s readiness to deepen its partnership with UNIDO.
Focus Areas of the Conference
Sessions at the conference covered a broad array of topics critical to the future of industry. Discussions included the evolution of manufacturing, the impact of digital transformation and artificial intelligence, climate action strategies, clean energy solutions, circular economy models, sustainable agribusiness practices, resilient supply chains, innovative financing mechanisms, and the empowerment of women and youth.
The engagement at the UNIDO General Conference not only reflects Qatar’s active role in global industrial dialogue but also its strategic focus on sustainable practices that align with international development goals. The discussions and partnerships formed during this event are expected to contribute significantly to advancing Qatar’s objectives in sustainable industrialization and economic diversification.
As the world faces multifaceted challenges, Qatar’s participation signals its dedication to fostering a collaborative framework that supports sustainable development and innovation across various sectors.
