Queenstown’s Luxury Boom: Attracting Wealthy Travelers Worldwide
Queenstown, New Zealand, is experiencing a surge in luxury tourism, with high-end accommodations and bespoke experiences catering to affluent travelers. Notably, the ROKI Collection has opened a hotel featuring rooms priced up to $50,000 per night, attracting a clientele eager for exclusivity and exceptional service. According to data from Queenstown Airport, visitor arrivals from January to November 2025 have risen nearly 40% compared to pre-COVID levels, highlighting the region’s growing appeal.
The ROKI Collection’s hotel, which opened in September on the site of a former backpackers’ hostel, offers 15 meticulously designed rooms. General manager Stephen McAteer explained that the hotel aims to provide a tranquil escape for high net worth travelers. Junior suites start at $2,800 per night during the off-season, while the Grand Roki Suite commands the premium rate of $50,000. Guests can expect bespoke amenities, including a Rolls Royce at their disposal and a “sleep concierge” to enhance their relaxation.
Each stay is supported by a dedicated staff of nearly 50, including drivers, chefs, and butlers, who arrange personalized experiences, from private boat outings to helicopter transfers to exclusive golf courses. McAteer noted that visitors typically spend four to five nights at the hotel, valuing the unique experiences offered rather than focusing solely on price.
The economic impact of this luxury boom is significant. Infometrics data indicates that domestic and international visitors spend approximately $2.83 billion annually in the district, primarily on food and beverage services. New attractions, including hot pool complexes and luxury car concierge services, have also contributed to the area’s appeal.
Further developments are on the horizon, with the five-star Coronet Ridge Resort set to open in late 2025, and the $130 million Noctis by Kamana planned for 2027. Mat Woods, chief executive of Destination Queenstown and Lake Wānaka Tourism, expressed excitement about the confidence shown by the private sector in Queenstown as a luxury destination.
The demand for unique experiences is being met by local businesses like those run by Ricky Bennett, who offers bespoke tours in rare Aston Martin vehicles. His services appeal to clients looking for something distinctive, from vineyard tours to helicopter excursions. With outings starting at $2,500, Bennett noted that many of his clients are repeat visitors seeking new adventures during their trips to Queenstown.
In Wānaka, luxury property agency Release NZ launched Black Label Retreats, targeting exclusive clientele willing to spend significantly on private accommodations. Founder Nick Frame described how guests are vetted for discretion and privacy, with homes designed for those preferring not to be publicly advertised. The agency organizes comprehensive luxury experiences, including personal chefs and guided outdoor activities.
Guests utilizing Frame’s services often represent families or business owners, with many from North America. He highlighted that high-spending visitors significantly contribute to the local economy, affecting a wide range of businesses from cleaners to chefs.
Despite the rise in luxury offerings, Queenstown maintains its appeal for budget travelers. Woods noted that the region accommodates various travel styles, suggesting that many visitors may first experience Queenstown as backpackers before returning with greater disposable income to invest in luxury accommodations and experiences.
This growth in luxury tourism reflects a broader trend of increasing sophistication among travelers, with many seeking tailored experiences that create lasting memories. As Queenstown continues to evolve, its blend of adventure and opulence is set to attract even more of the world’s wealthiest travelers.
