Celebrated Kiwi Filmmaker Costa Botes Passes Away at 62
Prolific New Zealand documentary filmmaker Costa Botes has passed away at the age of 62, following a nearly decade-long battle with cancer. Botes, renowned for his collaboration with Sir Peter Jackson on the acclaimed mockumentary Forgotten Silver, left an indelible mark on the film industry in New Zealand.
Botes’ contributions to cinema earned him multiple awards, particularly for Forgotten Silver, which garnered attention in the late 1990s. His body of work also includes significant accolades for short film Stalin’s Sickle (1988), as well as feature films Saving Grace (1999) and Lost in Wonderland (2010). According to New Zealand On Screen, Botes was involved in over 40 productions throughout his career, which spanned from 1980 to 2023.
A Journey from Wellington to Filmmaking Fame
Born to Greek parents on the Turkish island of Imbroz, Costa Botes grew up in Wellington, New Zealand. Initially pursuing an English literature degree, he soon shifted his focus to filmmaking, finding inspiration at the Ilam School of Fine Arts in Christchurch. Botes began his full-time filmmaking career in 1985, dedicating himself to various projects that showcased his unique storytelling abilities.
His innovative approach to filmmaking, particularly in the mockumentary genre, resonated widely with audiences. Forgotten Silver cleverly blended fact and fiction, captivating viewers and solidifying Botes’ reputation as a creative force in the industry.
