Chris Rea, Iconic Singer of “Driving Home For Christmas,” Dies
Chris Rea, the acclaimed singer-songwriter best known for his holiday classic “Driving Home for Christmas,” has passed away at the age of 72. His family announced that he died peacefully in hospital following a short illness, describing their loss as “immense.” The news of his death sparked an outpouring of tributes from fans and fellow musicians alike.
Born in Middlesbrough, a port town in northeast England, Rea rose to prominence with his debut studio album in 1978. His breakout hit, “Fool (If You Think It’s Over),” not only reached the US Billboard Hot 100 but also earned him a Grammy nomination, solidifying his status in the music industry. Over a career spanning five decades, Rea released 25 studio albums and sold more than 40 million records worldwide, becoming one of Britain’s most celebrated pop artists.
A Legacy of Seasonal Hits and Personal Struggles
“Driving Home for Christmas,” penned during a snowy journey when Rea was unemployed, became a beloved festive staple upon its release in 1986. The song has re-entered the UK charts annually and has been featured in numerous holiday advertising campaigns, including a recent one by retailer M&S. In a video clip shared on Instagram just last week, Rea recounted the circumstances of the song’s creation: “My manager had just left me, I’d just been banned from driving, my now wife, Joan, had to drive down to London, pick me up in the mini and take me home, and that’s when I wrote it.”
Beyond his music career, Rea had a passion for motor racing. He participated in the 1993 British Touring Car Championship as a guest driver, and two of his album covers—”Auberge” in 1991 and “The Best of Chris Rea” in 1994—featured cars, highlighting his enthusiasm for the sport.
While Rea’s musical journey was marked by success, it was also punctuated by serious health challenges. He battled pancreatic cancer in the 1990s and early 2000s and suffered a stroke in 2016, which affected his speech and movement. Despite these obstacles, he continued to record and tour, releasing his last album, “One Fine Day,” in 2019.
Remembering an Icon
Rea is survived by his wife, Joan, whom he met as a teenager, and their two daughters. His family’s statement reflects the profound impact he had on their lives and the legacy he leaves behind. As fans around the world mourn his passing, they celebrate the music that will continue to resonate during the holiday season and beyond.
With a career that inspired countless artists and touched millions of listeners, Chris Rea will be remembered not only for his chart-topping hits but also for his resilience in the face of adversity. His contributions to music and culture will remain a significant part of Britain’s artistic heritage.
