David Buick Shares Inspiring Journey at Golden Shears Fundraiser

The story of renowned shearer David Buick will be highlighted at the upcoming Golden Shears Rural versus Urban cabaret fundraiser, set for November 20, 2024, in Masterton, New Zealand. The event will take place at the Copthorne Hotel, a venue with a rich history of hosting Golden Shears events over the past 50 years. This year marks a continuation of the longstanding partnership with the Masterton Host Lions Club, which has been involved since the event’s inception in 1961.

Buick, who currently farms near Porangahau with his wife, Rebecca, and their family, is celebrated as one of the most successful shearers from the Wairarapa region. He has represented New Zealand in 21 test matches across New Zealand, Australia, and the United Kingdom. Despite his success, Buick remains focused on achieving a personal milestone: securing a first win in the Golden Shears Open. His most significant achievement to date is winning the New Zealand Shears Open title in Te Kuiti in 2024.

In October 2021, Buick faced a life-altering challenge when he suffered major injuries from a ditch collapse on his farm. Initially, specialists doubted his ability to walk again, but Buick’s determination proved them wrong. “I was determined to not let this one event rule my life,” he explained. Today, he shares his journey of resilience, speaking publicly about his experience and expressing gratitude for the support he has received.

Buick’s willingness to embrace challenges is evident in his recent endeavors. In 2019, he filled in as a mid-tour replacement for the New Zealand team in the UK, stepping directly from his farm onto an international flight. More recently, he joined the New Zealand trans-Tasman team on short notice for a test match in Jamestown, South Australia. Despite facing a storm that delayed his travel, he arrived just in time for practice and competition.

The challenges he faced during this trip were considerable. Leaving the farm early on Thursday, he navigated through numerous flight cancellations before finally reaching Jamestown late Friday afternoon. Immediately after arriving, he was thrust into practice with Australian crossbred sheep and then participated in the test match without having shorn any merino sheep prior. The New Zealand team, composed entirely of late replacements, ultimately lost by more than 40 points.

Back in New Zealand, Buick looks forward to the next challenge, including a friendly competition against his daughter Gemma in woolhandling at the Wairarapa A&P Show. He is also preparing for the upcoming selection series to determine the New Zealand team for the world championships at the Golden Shears, scheduled for March 4-7, 2025.
