Edgerton Shines in Haunting Epic ‘Train Dreams’ Streaming Now
The highly anticipated film Train Dreams, featuring Joel Edgerton, is now available for streaming on Netflix. Set against the backdrop of late 19th century America, the film captures the life of Robert Grainier, a man navigating personal loss and the harsh realities of a changing world. The adaptation of Denis Johnson‘s novella is drawing considerable attention, with critics suggesting it may earn Edgerton his first Oscar nomination.
Exploring Grief and Resilience
Robert Grainier, portrayed by Edgerton, is sent to live alone in Fry, Idaho, at a young age, after losing his parents under mysterious circumstances. The violence and instability surrounding him in the American northwest contribute to his early departure from school, leaving him adrift for two decades. It is only upon meeting Gladys, played by Felicity Jones, that he finds purpose. Their rapid bond leads to marriage and the construction of a home, yet Grainier’s life remains fraught with challenges.
To support his family, Robert takes on various logging jobs, including one with the Spokane International Railroad. His longing for Gladys and the emotional toll of witnessing the mistreatment of Chinese co-workers weigh heavily on him. The film poignantly explores his internal struggle as he grapples with the transitory nature of his work and the impact it has on his family life.
“I feel like I’m missing her life,” Robert expresses to Gladys, who suggests she and their daughter, Katie, join him. He declines, fearing for their safety while contemplating plans to build a sawmill. Just as hope begins to surface for the Grainier family, unforeseen events alter their trajectory forever.
A Cinematic Triumph
The film’s dialogue, crafted by co-writers Greg Kwedar and Clint Bentley, has been described as meditative and haunting, reminiscent of the works of Terrence Malick. Adolpho Veloso‘s cinematography captures the breathtaking beauty of Washington’s forests, creating a rich sense of place that enhances the narrative. Additionally, Will Patton‘s narration adds an elegiac quality that deeply resonates throughout the film.
The score by Bryce Dessner, noted for its emotional depth, complements the film’s storytelling. Critics have drawn parallels between Dessner’s composition and the musical scores of celebrated films such as The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford.
Edgerton’s performance is paired with a standout role from William H. Macy, who plays an explosive expert named Arn Peeples. Macy’s character offers poignant insights on life, revealing wisdom that lingers long after viewing. His line about the emotional weight of cutting down ancient trees—“hurts your soul”—echoes the film’s overarching themes of loss and reflection.
Edgerton, known for his roles in Loving and The Boys in the Boat, brings a raw vulnerability to Robert, making the character both relatable and compelling. His nuanced portrayal is being recognized as a potential contender for an Academy Award.
Following its debut at the Sundance Film Festival in January, Train Dreams secured an eight-figure distribution deal, underscoring the film’s anticipated impact on audiences. As it premieres on Netflix on November 21, 2023, viewers can expect a cinematic experience that is both intimate and expansive, capturing the essence of a man and his journey through grief and hope.
