Esteemed Filmmaker Costa Botes Passes Away After Cancer Battle
Renowned New Zealand documentary and film-maker Costa Botes has passed away after a prolonged battle with cancer, which he endured for nearly a decade. Botes, celebrated for his innovative work, gained prominence with the mockumentary Forgotten Silver, created in collaboration with acclaimed director Sir Peter Jackson. His death occurred at the Mary Potter Hospice in Wellington on November 21, 2023.
Botes received multiple accolades for his contributions to cinema, particularly for Forgotten Silver in the late 1990s. His portfolio also includes the short film Stalin’s Sickle, released in 1988, as well as Saving Grace in 1999 and Lost in Wonderland in 2010. Over his prolific career, he participated in more than 40 productions from 1980 to 2023, as documented by New Zealand On Screen.
Born to Greek parents on the Turkish island of Imbroz, Botes grew up in Wellington. He initially pursued a degree in English literature but found himself disengaged and “bored witless.” This prompted a shift in focus, leading him to study film at the Ilam School of Fine Arts in Christchurch. He transitioned to full-time filmmaking in 1985, embarking on a journey that spanned several decades.
Throughout his career, Botes was known for his innovative storytelling and unique approach to film-making. His work often blended humor and poignant social commentary, resonating with audiences both locally and internationally. The impact of his films, particularly Forgotten Silver, helped to shape the landscape of New Zealand cinema.
Botes’ legacy is characterized not just by his filmography but also by his influence on aspiring filmmakers in New Zealand. His commitment to the craft and his ability to tell compelling stories have inspired many in the industry. As tributes pour in from colleagues and fans alike, the film community reflects on the significant contributions Botes made to the art of cinema.
In addition to his filmmaking achievements, Botes was also a passionate advocate for the arts in New Zealand. He believed in the power of storytelling to foster understanding and connection among diverse audiences.
