Renowned Kiwi Filmmaker Costa Botes Passes Away at 61

Costa Botes, the acclaimed New Zealand documentary filmmaker, has died at the age of 61 after a long battle with cancer. His passing occurred on November 21, 2023, in Wellington’s Mary Potter Hospice. Botes was best known for his collaboration with Sir Peter Jackson on the mockumentary Forgotten Silver, which garnered significant attention in the late 1990s.

Botes’ contributions to cinema extended well beyond Forgotten Silver. He won numerous awards for his works, including the short film Stalin’s Sickle in 1988, and later projects like Saving Grace in 1999 and Lost in Wonderland in 2010. His extensive screenography, documented by New Zealand On Screen, includes more than 40 productions spanning from 1980 to 2023.

Born to Greek parents on the Turkish island of Imbroz, Botes spent his childhood in Wellington. He initially pursued an English literature degree but found himself “bored witless” and decided to change direction. He enrolled at the Ilam School of Fine Arts in Christchurch, where he immersed himself in film-making. This shift marked the beginning of a prolific career that saw him become a prominent figure in New Zealand’s film landscape.

In 1985, Botes transitioned to full-time film-making, dedicating his life to creating compelling narratives on screen. His ability to weave humor with poignant storytelling made his work resonate with audiences both locally and internationally.

His legacy includes not only his films but also the inspiration he provided to aspiring filmmakers in New Zealand. Colleagues and fans alike remember Botes for his creativity and passion for the art. His contributions have left a lasting impact on the New Zealand film industry, and he will be remembered for his unique voice and vision.
