American singer-songwriter Rob Thomas captivated audiences at Christchurch’s Te Pae Convention Centre on November 13, 2025, delivering a memorable concert as part of his All Night Days Tour. This event marked one of the first major international performances at the venue, showcasing its potential as a premier concert location.

The evening commenced with a lively 30-minute set by New Zealand alt-pop artist Riiki Reid, who performed tracks from her latest EP, Drench. Accompanied by a live drummer and backing tracks, Reid’s strong vocal presence shone through, despite the initial awkwardness of the brightly lit venue.

As the lights dimmed, Thomas and his five-piece band, which included his son Maison on guitar, took to the stage. They opened with “I Believe It,” a track from Thomas’s new album, All Night Days. The concert quickly turned into a crowd-pleasing mix of his solo hits, including “Her Diamonds,” “Heaven Help Me,” and “Lonely No More,” along with beloved classics from the legendary Matchbox Twenty. Thomas acknowledged the significance of the evening, noting that next year marks the 30th anniversary of their debut album.

Throughout the performance, the 53-year-old artist maintained a conversational and humorous rapport with the audience. He joked about his age, quipped regarding the open mic night he enjoyed in Christchurch the previous evening, and playfully addressed concert seating etiquette. “The point is, we have your money,” he remarked, highlighting his relaxed approach.

One of the concert’s highlights was a stripped-back rendition of “Bent,” which Thomas performed solo and acoustic. Despite a few false starts, this version showcased his exceptional vocal talent. He also surprised the audience with a lively cover of Elvis Presley‘s “That’s All Right,” and a yacht-rock interpretation of “3AM,” complete with saxophone solos, which added a touch of playfulness to the evening.

The nearly two-hour set featured a quasi-encore that began with “All Night Days.” Backing singer Kim Dawson then joined Thomas for a duet of “Under Pressure,” originally performed by Queen and David Bowie. The concert reached its climax with the crowd-favourite “Smooth,” a collaboration with Santana, which had nearly everyone on their feet. Thomas wrapped up the night with “This Is How a Heart Breaks,” leaving no doubt about his ability to deliver a world-class performance.

As Rob Thomas concludes his New Zealand tour at Wellington’s Michael Fowler Centre on November 15, 2025, tickets are still available through Ticketmaster. His performance at Te Pae not only entertained but also reinforced the venue’s status as a significant player in the international music scene.
