More than 2,000 health workers in Hawke’s Bay have received their share of nearly $10 million in overdue holiday pay and leave entitlements. The payments, which total approximately $9.6 million, were issued by Health NZ as part of its remediation programme under the Holidays Act. Each eligible employee in Hawke’s Bay has received, on average, $4,571 in compensation.

The initiative aims to address historical discrepancies in holiday pay across the health sector, affecting a wide range of workers. In addition to the Hawke’s Bay payments, $1 million was distributed to over 600 current employees in South Canterbury. This effort is part of a larger program that encompasses 24 payrolls and impacts around 90,000 current and 130,000 former employees.

Many health unions have expressed that these payments are long overdue, highlighting the need for timely and accurate compensation for workers. While the majority of employees are eligible for this remediation, it is important to note that some individuals were compensated correctly at the time, thus not qualifying for the current payouts.

This initiative underscores the ongoing efforts within the health sector to rectify past payroll errors. As the programme continues, it aims to ensure that all employees receive the pay they are entitled to, adhering to the legal standards set forth in the Holidays Act. The comprehensive approach taken by Health NZ is essential for restoring trust among health workers and ensuring fair treatment in the future.

The distribution of these funds marks a significant step towards addressing historical pay issues in the health sector, providing much-needed financial relief to thousands of workers in Hawke’s Bay and beyond.
