Miriama Kamo Explores Antarctica’s Wonders for New Documentary
Miriama Kamo recently embarked on a transformative journey to Antarctica, arriving just before the first sunrise after a prolonged six-month period of darkness. Captivated by the stark beauty of the icy continent, Kamo quickly transitioned from her flight to the waiting vehicles. “When we got off, we were immediately struck by how cold it was,” she remarked. “You’re told, ‘When the doors open, move quickly to get out of the way.’ It was a whirlwind going from the airstrip to the base, but beautiful.”
During her time at New Zealand’s Scott Base, the veteran broadcaster collaborated with Māori astronomers Dr. Rangi Matamua and Mataia Keepa to film a new documentary. The project, funded by Te Māngai Pāho, is scheduled for release next year in conjunction with the celebration of Matariki, a Māori New Year marking the rise of the Pleiades star cluster.
Kamo expressed her awe at the insights shared by Matamua and Keepa. “Rangi and Mataia wanted to understand things like how the moon, stars, and sun move differently there,” she explained. “Their discussions were amazing. I just felt so privileged to witness that.” The experience not only deepened her appreciation for Māori culture but also highlighted the unique astronomical phenomena that can be observed in Antarctica.
The documentary aims to shed light on the connections between Māori cosmology and the celestial bodies visible in the Antarctic sky. Kamo emphasized the importance of these discussions in bridging traditional knowledge with contemporary scientific understanding.
As Antarctica’s stark landscapes provided a stunning backdrop, Kamo found the environment to be both challenging and exhilarating. She described the expedition as a rare opportunity to reflect on life and the natural world. The extreme conditions, alongside the breathtaking scenery, prompted her to consider broader themes of resilience and adaptability.
Kamo’s journey serves as a reminder of the power of exploration and the importance of preserving cultural narratives. By highlighting the work of Māori astronomers, the documentary seeks to foster a deeper understanding of how indigenous knowledge can contribute to modern science.
With the documentary set to launch next year, anticipation builds around its potential to inspire viewers and spark conversations about the relationship between humanity and the cosmos. Kamo’s expedition to Antarctica not only broadened her horizons but also illuminated the profound connections that exist between people, culture, and the universe.
