Sheikh Joaan Set to Lead Olympic Council of Asia Following Acclamation
Sheikh Joaan bin Hamad Al Thani has been elected by acclamation as the President of the Olympic Council of Asia (OCA) during the General Assembly in Tashkent, Uzbekistan. His election comes as he continues to elevate Qatar’s status in the global sports arena through leadership that prioritizes ambition, professionalism, and excellence.
As the President of the Qatar Olympic Committee (QOC) since May 7, 2015, Sheikh Joaan has transformed the organization, leading it through one of its most successful periods. Under his guidance, Qatar achieved its best-ever Olympic performance at the Tokyo 2020 Games, winning three medals, including golds from Mutaz Barshim in high jump and Fares Ibrahim in weightlifting, alongside a bronze in beach volleyball.
Qatar Emerges as a Global Sports Hub
Beyond medal counts, Sheikh Joaan has positioned Qatar as a premier destination for major sporting events. The country was awarded the hosting rights for the 2030 Asian Games, showcasing international confidence in its infrastructure and organizational capabilities. This marks a return of the Asian Games to Doha, which previously hosted the event in 2006.
Sheikh Joaan’s influence extends beyond national borders. He serves as the First Vice President of the Association of National Olympic Committees (ANOC), focusing on developing sports administrators and professionals through initiatives like the Qatar Olympic Academy. His leadership has led to Qatar hosting prestigious events, including the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022, and the upcoming World Aquatics Championships 2024.
During his tenure, Qatar has hosted numerous international championships, such as the World Handball Championship in 2015 and the World Athletics Championships in 2019. The QOC’s calendar is packed with elite competitions, including the Diamond League athletics series and the Formula 1 Qatar Grand Prix.
Strategic Vision for the Future
Looking ahead, the QOC has ambitious plans for 2026, with a schedule of 83 international events, including the World University Weightlifting Championships and the Asian Under-18 Basketball Cup. These events will further solidify Qatar’s role in the global sports landscape.
Capacity building remains a fundamental aspect of Sheikh Joaan’s vision. The Qatar Olympic Academy is key to enhancing training and education for athletes and sports professionals, aligning with the broader goals of Qatar National Vision 2030 and initiatives like “Ambition Without Limits.”
The launch of the QOC’s 2023-2030 strategy emphasizes athlete development, the promotion of Olympic values, and the enhancement of sports’ role in social development. Sheikh Joaan’s contributions have not gone unnoticed; he was elected ANOC First Vice President for Asia in October 2022 and was honored with the Arab Sports Personality of the Year award in 2021.
As Sheikh Joaan prepares to lead the OCA, his journey exemplifies Qatar’s commitment to using sports as a vehicle for development and international engagement, reflecting the nation’s ambitious vision and dedication to excellence in athletics.
