Teacher Faces Disciplinary Action After Requesting ADHD Medication
A teacher in New Zealand has faced disciplinary action after he attempted to solicit ADHD medication from a student under his care. The incident raises serious concerns about professional boundaries and the responsibilities educators hold regarding student welfare.
The situation unfolded when the student, struggling with mental health issues, sought help from the teacher. Instead of directing her to the school counsellor, the teacher engaged with the student outside school hours using Microsoft Teams. Their communication intensified during her recovery from an eating disorder, but began to decline over the school holidays. However, upon returning to school, the teacher reached out, expressing difficulties with his concentration.
In a concerning text message, the teacher revealed his attempts to obtain “black-market” Ritalin or Concerta, asking if the student could sell him part of her prescription. The student, aware of the seriousness of his request, made excuses, stating her prescription was controlled and cautioning that the medication might not be suitable for him. Despite his initial approach, the teacher apologized and changed the subject, ultimately not pursuing the purchase.
The matter escalated to the Teachers’ Disciplinary Tribunal, where the teacher admitted to serious misconduct. During the tribunal, he expressed deep regret for his actions. “I’m disgusted at myself that I’ve done that to a young person,” he stated. He acknowledged his failure to refer the student to appropriate mental health support, emphasizing the conflict he felt between maintaining her confidentiality and his duty of care.
Professional Boundaries Breached
The tribunal highlighted that many of the messages exchanged between the teacher and the student were “overly familiar” and unprofessional. The nature of their communication resembled that of close friends rather than a teacher-student relationship. The tribunal remarked that the teacher’s behaviour constituted a significant breach of professional boundaries, as he not only provided emotional support but also sought assistance from the vulnerable student.
The tribunal’s findings were clear: the teacher’s actions were exacerbated by the frequency and length of their communications, coupled with his failure to involve a guidance counsellor or other qualified personnel. The tribunal noted, “The exchange reads as if between close friends, not teacher and student.”
As a result of his actions, the tribunal has mandated several measures. The teacher must be censured, demonstrate his fitness to teach through evidence from a health professional, undergo training focused on maintaining professional boundaries, and disclose the tribunal’s findings to any future employers.
The case underscores the critical importance of professional conduct within educational environments. Teachers are entrusted with the welfare of their students, and this incident serves as a reminder of the need for adherence to ethical standards, particularly when addressing sensitive mental health issues.
