Annual Sikh Parade in Tauranga Interrupted by Haka Performance

The annual Sikh parade in Tauranga, New Zealand, faced an unexpected interruption today when members of True Patriots of NZ, a group associated with Destiny Church, performed a haka in front of participants. The parade, which commenced at 11:00 a.m. on January 11, 2024, at the Gurudwara Sikh Sangat temple, celebrated the birth of Guru Gobind Singh Ji, the tenth Sikh Guru.

As the parade progressed, members of True Patriots of NZ assembled about one kilometre away from the Gurudwara and began their performance. Linking arms and chanting in front of a banner that read, “This is New Zealand, not India,” they aimed to assert their presence. Police were present during the event to ensure public safety and maintain order.

Puran Singh, the president of Gurudwara Sikh Sangat and one of the parade’s organizers, explained that the Nagar Kirtan did not occur at the same location as the haka. He noted, “It was a bit far,” and emphasized that the parade continued smoothly after the haka concluded around 13:00. “This was the twelfth annual Sikh Parade in Tauranga, and it takes place on a very large scale,” Singh remarked.

The event is not merely a celebration, according to Singh; it also serves as an opportunity for community engagement, with information on immigration services, health camps, and benefits shared with attendees. He praised the cooperation of the young participants and the assistance of local police and council authorities, highlighting that organizing large community events typically requires significant planning and permissions.

Singh urged the public to be cautious of misinformation circulating on social media, adding that the conclusion of the haka did not lead to any escalation or disruption. Inspector Christopher Summerville from the Māori Pacific Ethnic Service within the Bay of Plenty Police stated that officers on site acted swiftly to ensure the parade concluded without incident. “Additional patrols remain in the area to provide visibility and reassurance for the Sikh community,” he said. Importantly, no arrests were made during the event.

This incident marks the second occurrence involving True Patriots of NZ in less than a month. In December 2023, the group disrupted a Nagar Kirtan procession at the Nanaksar Sikh Temple in Manurewa, South Auckland. Eyewitnesses reported that the confrontation lasted about 30 minutes, during which police intervened to allow the parade to continue safely.

Footage shared on social media by Brian Tamaki, the leader of Destiny Church, showcased the haka performed by True Patriots of NZ. The video included captions such as “WHOSE STREETS? KIWI STREETS” and indicated that the performance was a form of “peaceful defiance.” The group describes itself on its Facebook page as “Guardians of the Kiwi Way of Life,” advocating against globalism and mass immigration while promoting a “free, Christian New Zealand.”

The events in Tauranga highlight ongoing tensions surrounding cultural expressions and community identity in New Zealand, as groups like True Patriots of NZ continue to assert their viewpoints in public spaces. The Sikh community remains resilient in its celebrations, emphasizing unity and cultural awareness amidst challenges.
