Celebrate a Perfect Kiwi Christmas: Tips from Experts
As the festive season approaches, New Zealanders are gearing up for celebrations filled with food, family, and friends. In a recent episode of The Detail, renowned guest Colin Mathura-Jeffree and event planner Trudi “the Foodie” Nelson shared their insights on hosting a memorable Kiwi Christmas, emphasizing the importance of community, harmony, and thoughtful preparation.
Embrace the Spirit of Giving and Community
Colin Mathura-Jeffree, a prominent figure in New Zealand’s social scene, highlighted the essence of being a good guest and host. He stated, “When you love someone, you feed them,” reflecting the central role that food plays during this time of year. He believes that attending community gatherings is paramount, saying, “I will drop everything … I will be there in a second, because it’s about my community.”
However, Mathura-Jeffree expressed concern about a growing trend where guests undermine the festive atmosphere by voicing dietary restrictions or preferences. He urged, “Don’t do that. Just harmonise with the party and don’t be a stand-out.” His advice underlines the idea that Christmas is a time for collective joy rather than individual demands.
Practical Hosting Tips for a Festive Gathering
Trudi Nelson, who has hosted numerous events, shared her approach to catering for diverse dietary needs. While it’s common for guests with specific requirements to bring their own food, Nelson suggests preparing simple yet appealing dishes for everyone. She recommends a festive salad featuring cherry tomatoes, which she likens to “little red baubles,” served on a bed of leafy greens with feta for added color.
Both Mathura-Jeffree and Nelson emphasized the necessity of maintaining a positive attitude, especially when family dynamics can become complicated. Nelson remarked, “You’ve just got to smile, smile and smile some more. It’s absolutely key.” She believes that a welcoming demeanor can enhance the atmosphere, even if the food isn’t perfect or decor isn’t extravagant.
When it comes to decorations, Mathura-Jeffree noted that creating a festive environment is crucial. Whether opting for a grand display or a more understated approach, he emphasized the importance of allowing guests to contribute to the decorations. Nelson suggested a clever hack: laying out decorations for guests to choose from as they arrive, fostering a sense of involvement.
Mathura-Jeffree also mentioned his growing awareness of sustainability during the festive season. He encourages using recyclable materials whenever possible and suggested incorporating native New Zealand flora, such as silver ferns and pohutukawa, into decorations. However, Nelson cautioned against overdoing it, advocating for a calm and relaxed atmosphere.
As many New Zealanders prepare to gather with loved ones, some may find themselves alone during the holidays. Nelson, who anticipates spending part of Christmas by herself, expressed hope that others will open their doors to those in need. She stated, “If you can open up your door to extras this time of year, then far out … do it.”
The advice shared by Mathura-Jeffree and Nelson encapsulates the essence of a Kiwi Christmas: fostering community spirit, embracing diversity, and creating an inviting environment for all. As the holiday season approaches, these insights can help ensure that gatherings are both joyful and memorable.
