Kiwi-Indian Duo Embraces Van Life Adventure Across New Zealand
Ami and Sagar, a young Kiwi-Indian couple, have embarked on a transformative journey, living in their travel van, Wander Bee, since September 2023. After quitting their stable jobs, they decided to explore New Zealand and beyond, redefining what it means to start over in their 30s.
For Ami, the idea of travelling full-time was inspired by concepts seen in Western countries. “I was hooked on the idea of travelling full time,” she shared. Their journey represents an “adult gap year,” a deliberate choice to step back from traditional careers to focus on personal growth, travel, and new experiences. With a disciplined budget of $160 a day, they have embraced a lifestyle of freedom camping, taking in the stunning landscapes of Aotearoa.
From Concept to Reality
Originating from Surat, Gujarat, Ami and Sagar noted that such a lifestyle was a luxury not typically available in India. “Growing up in India, you know we don’t have the luxury to have an ‘adult gap year’, but we wanted to experience what it feels like,” they explained. Convincing their families of their decision took time and communication, emphasizing the potential for growth and success in this lifestyle.
Having lived in New Zealand for over a decade and recently obtaining their citizenship, the couple’s decision to leave their jobs stemmed from a shared passion for travel. “It took years of planning, saving, budgeting, and asking the harder question: is this sustainable?” Sagar said. Although their initial plan was to travel for just one year, they ultimately decided to quit their six-figure jobs to pursue their dreams.
Their travels began in 2024, initially exploring Asia and then Eastern and Central Europe. Upon returning to New Zealand in August 2025, they envisioned experiencing their adopted home from the comfort of their van, setting off to explore the country further in September after leaving their full-time jobs.
Navigating Life as Digital Nomads
Adjusting to the rhythm of being digital nomads proved to be a significant challenge. “That shift was very hard in itself,” Ami remarked, explaining the logistical complexities of managing this new lifestyle. Unlike a typical tourist itinerary, their content creation reflects the authenticity of life on the road, offering a depth of experience that comes from truly exploring New Zealand.
Initially starting with a YouTube channel, their focus shifted towards Instagram, where they realized the potential for faster growth. Their account, @sagarandami, grew from 2,000 followers in June 2025 to over 30,000 followers today. Together, they manage their social media presence, with Ami overseeing logistics and Sagar focusing on creative content.
On workdays, they seek out Department of Conservation (DOC) campsites, set up their workstations, complete tasks, and unwind with simple meals and entertainment. Their partnership extends into their work, collaborating with brands such as the New Zealand Tourism Board and Kiwi Rail to enhance visibility through their platform.
Essential Guidelines for Van Life
Ami and Sagar emphasize three key principles for anyone considering a similar lifestyle: first, flexibility is crucial as unexpected situations will arise. Second, respect local laws and regulations, particularly when engaging in freedom camping, which carries responsibilities such as proper waste disposal. Third, they recommend downloading useful apps that streamline the experience.
Currently exploring the South Island, the couple has developed a fondness for the Mackenzie region, appreciating its serene landscapes and tranquility. As they look ahead, Ami and Sagar plan to continue their travels across the South Island until March 2026. With goals to save $20,000 and reach 50,000 followers by year-end, they are optimistic about their future adventures.
Their journey serves as a testament to the balance of discipline and dreams, illustrating what it means to start anew in one’s 30s while navigating the complexities of modern travel and content creation.
