New Zealand Architects Honoured with 2025 Design Awards

The New Zealand Institute of Architects (NZIA) has announced the winners of its prestigious 2025 awards, celebrating excellence in design across the nation. Recognising a diverse range of projects, the awards ceremony took place at Te Pae Christchurch Convention Centre, where a total of 29 awards were distributed across 11 categories.

Among the notable winners are the architects behind the innovative changing sheds at a new aquatic venue on the Auckland waterfront, as well as the apartment complex situated at Hobsonville Point. The University of Auckland also received accolades for its newly constructed Hiwa sports centre, which showcases modern architectural practices.

Celebrating a Variety of Designs

The awards honour a spectrum of architectural achievements, from large developments to smaller, community-focused structures. The changing sheds, designed to resemble orange containers, exemplify functionality while enhancing the appeal of the swimming venue. This juxtaposition of grand and modest designs highlights the versatility and creativity within New Zealand’s architectural landscape.

In the heritage category, significant recognition was given to a comprehensive renovation project at the Te Whare o Rehua Sarjeant Gallery in Whanganui, executed by Warren and Mahoney Architects. This extensive undertaking demonstrates a commitment to preserving cultural heritage while modernising the space for contemporary use. Other winners in this category included a reconstructed pātaka kai, designed by Dalgleish Architects, and the landmark renewal of the Chapel of the Upper Room in Christchurch, realised by Wilkie + Bruce Registered Architects.
