Queen Mother Alexandra Passes Away, Nation Mourns Loss
Queen Alexandra, the beloved Queen Mother of King George V, passed away peacefully on the afternoon of November 23, 1925, at Sandringham. Her death was confirmed in a bulletin released at 17:40, stating that she had been surrounded by the King, Queen, and other members of the Royal Family.
The news came after several bulletins throughout the day had indicated a serious decline in her health. Earlier updates had stated that there was only a “slender hope” for her recovery.
The Prince of Wales and the Duke of York arrived at a railway station just 16 minutes behind schedule, missing their grandmother’s passing by a mere four minutes. Upon learning of her death from the stationmaster, the Princes bowed their heads in silence before departing in a waiting car.
Global Condolences and Tributes
In response to the Queen Mother’s death, New Zealand’s Governor-General, Fergusson, sent a heartfelt message to King George V, expressing profound grief on behalf of the Government and people of New Zealand. The message conveyed the deep sympathy felt for the Royal Family, stating, “New Zealand joins with the whole Empire in mourning for one so greatly beloved.”
Queen Alexandra was born on December 1, 1844, the eldest daughter of the late King Christian IX of Denmark. She became an integral part of British society, having been embraced by the nation since her marriage to King Edward VII in 1863. Although she stepped back from public life following her husband’s death in 1910, she maintained a cherished place in the hearts of the British people throughout her lifetime.
A Legacy of Love and Compassion
The news of her passing reached public venues, prompting buildings and pavilions to lower their flags to half-mast in a mark of respect. A special meeting of the Exhibition directors was held, during which it was decided to cancel the scheduled performances by the Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders, reflecting the somber mood of the nation.
Queen Alexandra’s character was marked by her warmth, tact, and genuine affection for the people she served. Her dedication to humanitarian causes and her strong ties with the nation earned her deep respect and admiration. She embodied qualities of grace and kindness that resonated with people from all walks of life.
As the nation reflects on her long and impactful life, it is clear that Queen Alexandra’s legacy will endure in the hearts of those who cherished her. Her contributions to British society and her unwavering compassion will be remembered as a testament to her character and commitment to the well-being of others.
