In her post-election message, Barker expressed her deep gratitude to the community for their support, stating she feels “humbled and honoured” by the trust bestowed upon her and her vision for Dunedin. She recognized the importance of her election by paying tribute to those who paved the way before her, particularly acknowledging the legacy of Dunedin’s first female mayor, Sukhi Turner.
Priorities for the Future
Looking ahead, Barker has set forth a clear agenda for her term. She has highlighted several key priorities, including advocating for the Dunedin Hospital, ensuring value for ratepayers, improving the culture within the council, promoting the city, and fostering economic growth.
Barker’s election represents a new chapter for Dunedin, characterized by optimism and a commitment to inclusivity. Her focus on community engagement and transparency aims to strengthen the relationship between the council and residents, which she views as essential for the city’s progress.
As she embarks on her mayoral term, Barker’s leadership style promises to be collaborative, emphasizing the importance of listening to the community’s needs. Her vision aims to address current challenges while laying the groundwork for a prosperous future. With her election, Dunedin appears poised for a transformative period, driven by a leader who is both passionate and dedicated to the city’s growth and well-being.
