Wellington Couple Transforms Historic Factory into Stylish Home
A Wellington couple has successfully transformed a historic shoe factory into a stylish apartment that merges vintage charm with contemporary design. Graham and Jacqui Nelson recently completed an extensive renovation of their new home located in the Hannah’s Factory Apartments on Leeds Street. This building, originally designed by the renowned architect Ian Athfield, dates back to the 1990s and boasts a unique character in each of its apartments.
The journey to their new home began years earlier when Jacqui expressed curiosity about available apartments, despite their love for their villa in Mt Victoria. A conversation sparked by Graham’s initial hesitation turned into a proactive search. Jacqui kept in touch with a real estate agent, waiting for the right opportunity to arise. After six years, the couple found their chance and seized it, with Graham’s initial doubts turning into excitement.
The renovation process proved to be both rewarding and challenging. The couple’s vision for their apartment included significant changes, which were not merely cosmetic. Jacqui, recently retired after a 20-year career at Contact Energy, initially described her vision as “a little titivating,” a term that Graham interpreted as minor enhancements. Instead, it led to a complete reconfiguration of the space, including the removal of internal walls across three floors.
Their apartment spans three levels, with shops and a cocktail bar located at ground level. Jacqui humorously noted that the previous owners had a habit of ordering cocktails to take home via the lift. The couple now enjoys living in a vibrant area surrounded by a pizza outlet, a chocolate factory, and a bakery just a short distance away.
Upon entering the apartment, residents are greeted by beautiful steel-framed windows that reflect the building’s history. Many glass panes are original, featuring a characteristic wobbly texture. The lower two levels also retain timber floorboards, ceiling beams, and internal brick walls that enhance the industrial feel of the space.
The renovation included the creation of three well-sized bedrooms with ample storage, a more efficient kitchen, and the addition of three skylights that brighten the living area. A significant decision was made to replace the dark-timber staircase with a modern design featuring steel and glass. This new staircase, with recycled timber treads, was craned into the building, showcasing the couple’s commitment to both style and functionality.
Their eclectic decor reflects their personal tastes, featuring a mix of vibrant colors and art. The couple has chosen furnishings in shades of green, purple, and yellow, creating a lively atmosphere. Their art collection predominantly features works by New Zealand artists, including pieces from Karl Maughan and Derek Cowie. They found common ground in their artistic preferences through a collaborative approach, allowing for individual veto power on selections.
As Graham prepares for retirement from his role as a private wealth advisor with Jarden, he looks forward to spending more time enjoying their new apartment. The couple believes this may very well become their forever home.
Jacqui and Graham shared insights on their renovation journey, emphasizing the importance of listening to tenant feedback during their rental period to inform design decisions. They expressed gratitude for the expertise of their architect, Clare Bush, and their builder, Jason Lang, highlighting the essential role of their team in the successful completion of the project.
The couple’s experience serves as a reminder of the potential that lies within historic spaces. As they embrace their new lifestyle in Wellington, they look forward to enjoying the vibrant community and the unique character that comes with their transformed home.
