The new children’s playground at Barry Curtis Park in Flat Bush, Auckland, was officially opened on March 10, 2024, by members of the Howick Local Board and representatives from Ngai Tai ki Tamaki. This addition aims to enhance recreational options for families in the region, reflecting the community’s commitment to providing vibrant public spaces.

As the deputy chairperson of the Howick Local Board, Kai Zeng emphasized the importance of community engagement during his first month in the role. He has focused on balancing ongoing projects with fresh initiatives to meet the evolving needs of the local populace, which constitutes approximately 9.5 percent of Auckland’s population.

Zeng highlighted his collaboration with local board chairperson Bruce Kendall on the Ormiston Library and Community Centre project. Their efforts are directed toward identifying and resolving challenges that could impede timely delivery. Additionally, Zeng participated in the monthly chair’s forum, where local chairpersons convene to discuss essential regional priorities, including the City Rail Link and recreation services.

A recent information session in Botany, organized by Howick’s ward councillors, addressed the community’s concerns surrounding the PC120 housing legislation. The local board remains steadfast in its support for residents, advocating for legislative reforms that align with community needs.

Prioritizing youth involvement, the board actively supports various initiatives aimed at fostering young talent and community cohesion. Notable programs include the Howick Youth Council, which has initiated projects like Adulting 101 and the Junior Youth Summit. Environmental education is championed by Pest Free Howick, while Arts Out East promotes local artists and cultural endeavors.

The board’s outreach extends to Business East Tamaki, which represents over 3,300 businesses and 2,100 property owners. Recently, they hosted Future Connect: Building Youth and Employer Readiness Together, a program designed to prepare young individuals for the workforce.

Zeng also noted his engagement with various youth-focused initiatives, including the Let Me Speak civic engagement panel and local police initiatives aimed at fostering positive relationships between youth and law enforcement.

Auckland Council has launched a Local Boards Instagram channel to keep residents updated on community events, libraries, and transportation developments. Starting in 2025, the board plans to enhance face-to-face interactions by coordinating conversations at school assemblies and community gatherings.

The Howick Local Board is now in the process of shaping the Howick Local Board Plan for 2026. This plan is crucial for setting future priorities, and the board encourages community members to share their thoughts and ideas to collectively build a prosperous future for east Auckland.
