PM Luxon Dazzles at Sikh Games by Making Jalebis in Auckland
New Zealand Prime Minister Christopher Luxon made a memorable appearance at the Sikh Games in Auckland by attempting to create traditional Indian jalebis, much to the delight of the crowd. The event took place on March 17, 2024, at Bruce Pulman Park in Takanini, where Luxon, accompanied by local MP Rima Nakhle, attended the opening ceremony and engaged with athletes, performers, and volunteers.
The Sikh Games is an annual celebration that gathers the Sikh community for sports competitions and cultural festivities. This year’s event showcased a variety of traditional Sikh sports alongside Western sports, drawing participants and spectators from across New Zealand and around the globe, according to reports from the Hindustan Times.
One of the standout moments occurred when Luxon, with a cheerful demeanor, stood behind a large wok filled with hot oil to try his hand at making jalebis. Attendees captured the light-hearted scene as he skillfully poured batter into the hot oil, eliciting cheers and laughter from the audience.
In a video shared on his Instagram account, Luxon expressed his enthusiasm for being part of the event: “Getting amongst it at the Sikh Games in Takanini this afternoon with local MP @rimanakhlenz. Good luck to all those competing – and to those who end up eating my attempt at making jalebi!”
Reactions on social media were overwhelmingly positive. One user dubbed him “the coolest Prime Minister ever,” while another humorously requested, “Half kg for me please.” Comments such as “Prime Minister what you cooking it looks delicious yummy. The best cook awesome,” reflected the community’s appreciation for his participation.
MP Rima Nakhle also shared highlights from the event on Instagram, showcasing Luxon alongside Ministers Mark Mitchell and Simeon Brown as they interacted with attendees. She remarked, “Another amazing, electric, phenomenal @nzsikhgames has just wrapped up at South Auckland’s sports complex @brucepulmanpark. Our Prime Minister @christopherluxon and Ministers @markmitchellmp and @simeonbrownmp had a fantastic time at the opening ceremony, and afterwards, while meeting many athletes, spectators, and volunteers.”
Nakhle emphasized the scale of the event, noting that it attracts athletes and spectators from diverse locations, underscoring the importance of community and cultural celebration. She concluded her post by congratulating the organizers and volunteers for their efforts in making the event a success.
The Sikh Games not only highlight athletic talent but also serve as a platform for cultural exchange and community bonding, reinforcing the significance of such gatherings in fostering unity and diversity within New Zealand’s multicultural landscape.
