Politicians Reflect on Their Lives: Memoirs and Untold Stories
This year has brought forth two notable memoirs from prominent New Zealand politicians: Dame Jacinda Ardern and Grant Robertson. Their publications add to a growing collection of political memoirs from former Members of Parliament and Prime Ministers, capturing insights from both mid-career and post-political life. While history is often shaped by its victors, the narratives of those who have faced challenges can offer a captivating perspective.
Insights from Political Experts
In a recent discussion, Jim McAloon, a political history professor at Victoria University, and seasoned political journalist Tim Murphy shared their thoughts on the landscape of political literature. Both expressed a deep appreciation for political memoirs and discussed the characteristics that make a memoir compelling.
McAloon pointed out a significant gap in the literature surrounding two influential leaders: Sir Sid Holland, Prime Minister from 1949 to 1957, and William Ferguson Massey, who served from 1912 to 1925. According to McAloon, “Neither of them have had substantial biographies at all, and that’s a great gap.” He emphasized Holland’s role in modernizing the National Party and Massey’s contributions during a transformative period in New Zealand’s history.
While these figures may not have had colorful personal lives, their political careers are rich with detail. McAloon expressed interest in a potential memoir from Pita Sharples and suggested that Sir John Key deserves more thorough scrutiny than what has been presented in existing literature. He noted that Bill English, a quiet yet effective politician, could also provide intriguing insights through a well-crafted memoir.
Desire for Authenticity and Depth
Murphy’s wish list for political memoirs includes former Labour leader David Shearer, whom he described as an influential international aid worker. He is particularly interested in the formative experiences that shaped Shearer’s perspective more than his early family life. Murphy stated, “I want to know stuff that only they know,” underlining the desire for authenticity and behind-the-scenes revelations in political biographies.
In discussing the shortcomings of some recent memoirs, Murphy critiqued Ardern’s book for lacking transparency regarding caucus discussions. He noted that “nothing is more unsatisfying in a political biography or memoir than when crucial parts are withheld,” suggesting that readers crave insights into the inner workings of political decision-making.
In contrast, he praised Robertson’s memoir for its candidness and engaging anecdotes, particularly regarding his time working alongside Winston Peters. Murphy highlighted the importance of sharing personal experiences that resonate with readers, stating, “I want to be taken where none of us get to see.”
As political memoirs continue to emerge, the conversation around them reveals a hunger for deeper understanding and engagement with the public’s political figures. The insights shared by McAloon and Murphy illustrate a rich field of exploration for future authors who seek to document not just the highs, but also the complexities of political life.
