Ukraine Deploys Special Forces to Fortify Pokrovsk Against Russian Assault
Ukraine has deployed special forces to the eastern city of Pokrovsk as it faces an intensified assault from Russian troops. The announcement was made by Oleksandr Syrsky, Ukraine’s commander-in-chief, amidst reports of thousands of Russian soldiers closing in on this strategic logistics hub located in the Donetsk region. The city holds significant importance as it lies on a major supply route for Ukrainian forces, making it a prime target for Moscow.
Reports indicate that hundreds of Russian soldiers have infiltrated Pokrovsk, and others are advancing towards its outskirts in a pincer movement. According to the Institute for the Study of War, this approach aims to encircle the city. Syrsky confirmed the ongoing operation, stating, “A comprehensive operation to destroy and displace enemy forces from Pokrovsk is under way.” He added that consolidated groups of special operations forces are actively engaged in the city, although he did not provide further details on their operations.
Videos circulating on social media appear to show helicopters flying over Pokrovsk, alongside footage captured by a Russian drone, which reportedly shows figures disembarking from a helicopter in a field. Special forces are trained for covert operations, often employing unconventional warfare tactics such as sabotage and diversion.
Despite the mounting pressure, Syrsky emphasized that there is no blockade of Pokrovsk, countering claims of encirclement. He stated, “We are doing everything to implement logistics.” Prior to the conflict, Pokrovsk was home to approximately 60,000 residents; however, it now stands largely deserted due to the ongoing fighting.
The Russian military has been making incremental advances over the past year, engaging in costly battles that observers say lack significant strategic value. Currently, Russian forces occupy about a fifth of Ukraine, including the Crimean Peninsula, which was annexed in 2014. The situation in Pokrovsk has intensified as Russia has ramped up missile attacks across Ukraine.
Data released recently indicates that Russian forces launched a record number of missile strikes on Ukraine in October 2023, with a total of 270 missiles fired—an increase of 46% from September. This surge marks the highest monthly total since Ukraine began tracking such statistics earlier in the year. The strikes have primarily targeted Ukraine’s energy infrastructure, resulting in widespread power outages affecting hundreds of thousands of people.
Russian President Vladimir Putin initiated the large-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, branding it a “special military operation” aimed at demilitarizing the country and countering NATO expansion. However, Kyiv and its European allies characterize the invasion as an unprovoked and illegal attempt to seize territory, leading to extensive loss of life and displacement.
This ongoing conflict has resulted in tens of thousands of military and civilian casualties since its onset, with millions of Ukrainians forced to abandon their homes. Earlier today, Ukrainian officials reported that Russian drone and missile attacks killed at least two individuals, further highlighting the ongoing dangers faced by civilians in the war-torn country.
As the situation develops, the defense of Pokrovsk remains critical for Ukraine, not only for its military strategy but also for the morale of its forces and citizens.
