B+LNZ Launches Genomics Project to Enhance Sheep Breeding

A new genomics initiative, spearheaded by Beef + Lamb New Zealand (B+LNZ), aims to transform sheep breeding by enhancing genetic prediction accuracy. This project falls under the Cool Sheep® programme and focuses on genotyping a diverse array of influential sires across multiple sheep breeds, including minority breeds. By doing so, it strives to improve traits that are significant for farmers, such as health, productivity, and resilience.

The ambitious project intends to genotype up to 3,500 rams owned by more than 300 breeders. Dr. Jason Archer, head of genetics at B+LNZ, emphasizes the untapped potential of genomics in the sheep industry. He states that this initiative will make genomic technologies more accessible, thereby enabling breeders to better address challenges related to animal welfare, labor inputs, and environmental sustainability.

The genotyping effort will provide a comprehensive understanding of the genetic diversity within the sheep population of New Zealand. By investing in genomic resources now, B+LNZ is working to future-proof breeding programs. This includes improving the overall genetic landscape and ensuring that farmers can leverage genomic information for a broad range of traits.

Participation in the study involves minimal cost to breeders. They are required only to collect a tissue sample from their rams and submit it for genotyping. All associated costs are covered by the project, and most participants will have their genotype data incorporated into the New Zealand Genetic Evaluation (NZGE) system.

While some breeds may not have genotypes represented within the NZGE yet, this project is designed to lay the groundwork for smaller breed groups. The aim is to allow these groups access to genomic tools that facilitate breeding values and foster genetic improvements.

The results from this genotyping will enhance researchers’ understanding of genetic diversity among breeds and provide insights into the full genome of individual animals. When aggregated with other genomic data sets, this will enable future trait identification and improve the accuracy of molecular breeding values.

The project employs medium density (MD) genotyping and low-pass sequencing techniques, the latter of which is a cost-effective method being trialed by AgResearch. This next-generation technology skims the genome, allowing for sequencing at a lower cost while maintaining effectiveness. Part of the initiative involves comparing these new techniques with existing methods to ensure future advancements in genetic research.

The Cool Sheep® programme receives backing from the Ministry for Primary Industries through its Climate Emergency Response Fund (CERF), showcasing a commitment to sustainable agricultural practices.
