Innovative Companies Transforming Agriculture and Food Safety
Recent advancements in agricultural technology and food safety management are being spearheaded by several innovative companies in New Zealand. These organizations are not only enhancing operational efficiencies but are also contributing to sustainable practices in the industry.
MastaPlex Revolutionizes On-Farm Diagnostics
MastaPlex, based in Otago, has developed a groundbreaking system to combat bovine mastitis, a leading cause of antibiotic overuse in dairy farming. The company’s patented diagnostic system, Mastatest, is the only one globally that identifies both the bacteria causing the infection and its antibiotic sensitivity. This system offers best-practice treatment advice without the need for specialist training, delivering results in under 24 hours.
According to Dr. Olaf Bork, chief executive of MastaPlex, clinical trials published in peer-reviewed journals have confirmed the system’s effectiveness. This validation has encouraged dairy farmers and veterinarians to adopt new practices that enhance animal welfare. Developed and manufactured in Otago, Mastatest is now exported to thousands of customers across more than 20 countries. The company launched a new version, Mastatest G3, in June 2024, incorporating feedback from real-world trials to optimize user experience. Enhanced data analytics capabilities support farmers in making informed decisions for healthier herds, while MastaPlex is also exploring applications of its technology for other animal diseases.
Chomp Enhances Food Safety Management
Another innovative player, Chomp, is redefining food safety management for the hospitality sector. Founded in Queenstown, the company has created software that replaces outdated paper-based systems with a digital solution designed for compliance. Jen-Ni Quante, marketing manager at Chomp, states that the software is used daily by teams in cafes, restaurants, hotels, and childcare facilities to manage food safety compliance from any device.
Chomp has significantly upgraded its platform in the past year, introducing ChompHQ, a management dashboard that enables businesses to transition from reactive to proactive food safety management. The team collaborates closely with chefs and managers to ensure that the software is user-friendly and more efficient than traditional methods. As a result, customers are experiencing less compliance error, improved audit confidence, and more engaged staff.
AbacusBio Drives Genetic Innovation
Founded in 2001 and headquartered in Dunedin, AbacusBio Ltd combines scientific expertise with business intelligence to foster genetic improvement across the agricultural sector. Group managing director Nadia McLean highlights the company’s mission to enhance food sustainability through innovative practices.
AbacusBio employs a diverse team of experts, including geneticists and data scientists, to integrate various fields such as genomics and economics into their solutions. The company has successfully implemented projects in rural India and East Africa, empowering local farmers and improving crop yields. By bridging the gap between research institutions and practical applications, AbacusBio is making significant strides in global agricultural development.
Incredible Software Streamlines Business Operations
Incredible Software is transforming business operations by providing AI-powered solutions that simplify complex processes. Co-chief executive Stephen Johnson explains that the company focuses on eliminating operational headaches associated with scattered inventory tracking and time-consuming sales quoting.
With a global client base, Incredible Software develops a range of tools, including a phone agent that can handle calls and generate reports autonomously. This innovative approach allows businesses to streamline operations and refocus on strategic priorities. The company’s team has doubled and now includes remote colleagues in various countries, enhancing their ability to deliver effective solutions worldwide.
These companies exemplify the innovative spirit emerging from New Zealand, showcasing how technology and smart design can lead to significant advancements in agriculture and food safety management. Through their efforts, they are not only improving operational efficiencies but are also contributing to a more sustainable future.
