Auckland FC’s Guillermo May Aims for More Goals This Season
Auckland FC forward Guillermo May is determined to improve his scoring record this season as the team prepares for their fifth round match in the A-League. Despite not yet finding the back of the net this year, May remains optimistic that Auckland will surpass their impressive goal tally from last season, in which they scored 50 goals—the fastest a club has reached this milestone in the competition’s two-decade history.
Reflecting on his previous season, May recalls scoring his first goal during the fifth round, contributing significantly to his total of nine goals. Although he has not scored in his first three matches and one substitute appearance this season, he is not overly concerned. May acknowledges feeling a bit of “anxiety” about missed opportunities but emphasizes his commitment to contributing to the team’s overall success. “If the team wins and I don’t score, I prefer to be on a winning team than be the scoring man,” he stated.
Team Development and Competitive Edge
Looking ahead, May sees the addition of new players Sam Cosgrove and Lachlan Brook as significant boosts to the squad. He believes their presence enhances the team’s attacking potential. “We are playing with the ball better than last season, and that is helping us to create better chances,” May explained. He is confident that Auckland will score more goals this year, citing the improved training and teamwork he witnesses on the pitch.
May also notes an increase in overall competitiveness throughout the league this season. With more teams vying for a top-six playoff position, Auckland currently sits at the top of the A-League table—an advantageous position they maintained for much of the previous season. Despite this strong start, May is aware that complacency could jeopardize their success. “It’s been a good start for us, because the four teams we’ve faced are going to be competitive,” he said.
Personal Goals and Upcoming Matches
On a personal level, May is recovering from injury and is gradually regaining his form. He describes a fluctuating journey back to full fitness, stating, “I’m getting back to the pace, the rhythm, the fitness.” He sets high expectations for himself, aiming to enhance his contributions in creating scoring opportunities rather than solely focusing on personal goals. “I push every day to be better, and I want to upgrade my stats,” he asserted.
May will have another opportunity to break his scoring drought when Auckland FC hosts Brisbane Roar on March 17, 2024. As the team continues to build on their early-season momentum, fans and supporters alike will be eager to see how May and his teammates perform in this upcoming fixture.
