Australia Adjusts Ashes Squad: Murphy Steps Up, Cummins Out
Australia’s cricket team has announced significant changes ahead of the fourth test of the Ashes series, with spinner Todd Murphy replacing Nathan Lyon, who has been ruled out for the remainder of the series due to a hamstring injury. This decision follows Australia’s recent victory over England by 82 runs at the Adelaide Oval, which secured the series win and allowed them to retain the Ashes.
Lyon’s injury occurred during the third test, leading to surgery earlier this week. Team coach Andrew McDonald confirmed that Lyon is “devastated” but is already focused on aiming for a return during the upcoming tour of India in early 2027. “It’s going to be a hard period for him to get back to where he was, but he still wants to do it, and that’s the main thing,” McDonald stated.
In addition to Murphy, who made his debut in 2023 and has played seven tests, the squad will also see Jhye Richardson included as a pace option after demonstrating strong domestic performance following shoulder surgery. Richardson trained with the team in Adelaide and is expected to bolster the bowling attack alongside Brendan Doggett or Michael Neser, who may fill the void left by Pat Cummins. Cummins, who took six wickets for 117 runs in the Adelaide test, is still recovering from a back injury and will not participate further in the series.
McDonald elaborated on Cummins’ situation, saying, “We were taking on some risk with him, and we’ve now won the series, and that was the goal. So to position him for further risk and jeopardise him long term is not something that we want to do. And Pat’s really comfortable with that.”
With Steve Smith set to captain the team again, having led the side during the first two tests of the series, he will take charge in Cummins’ absence. Smith had missed the third test due to a bout of vertigo but has since returned to fitness.
Top-order batsman Usman Khawaja retains his position in the squad despite being dropped for the Adelaide test. He was called back at the last minute when Smith was unable to play, demonstrating the team’s depth and adaptability.
As Australia prepares for the next match at the Melbourne Cricket Ground starting on Friday, McDonald emphasized the importance of strategy in their bowling lineup. “Todd’s been an important part of a key overseas series. We feel as though Todd’s back to his best… We’ll work through that,” he said, highlighting the team’s commitment to finding the right balance between spin and pace.
The updated Australian squad includes: Steve Smith (captain), Scott Boland, Alex Carey, Brendan Doggett, Cameron Green, Travis Head, Josh Inglis, Usman Khawaja, Marnus Labuschagne, Todd Murphy, Michael Neser, Jhye Richardson, Mitchell Starc, Jake Weatherald, and Beau Webster.
With these changes, Australia aims to build on their momentum from the previous tests and solidify their position in the Ashes series as they move forward.
