Central Stags Triumph Over Firebirds in Thrilling Super Smash Clash
In a gripping encounter at the Basin Reserve on March 13, 2024, the Central Stags edged out the Wellington Firebirds by just two runs in a high-scoring match of the Super Smash tournament. The Stags posted a formidable total of 197-3, led by an impressive performance from wicketkeeper-batter Dane Cleaver, who scored 67 runs off 45 balls. Despite a valiant effort from the Firebirds, who managed 195-7, they fell just short in their chase.
The match unfolded dramatically as the Central Stags batted first. Cleaver’s innings was a highlight, and he capitalized on a missed stumping opportunity by Firebirds’ wicketkeeper Tom Blundell. After being beaten by a delivery from legspinner Peter Younghusband, Blundell failed to make the crucial catch, allowing Cleaver to go on and build his score. Cleaver’s contribution was pivotal, but he was not alone in his efforts. Captain Tom Bruce, fresh from his success with the Desert Vipers in the ILT20 competition, added 55 runs off just 30 balls. Additionally, Dean Foxcroft provided solid support with a quick 44 runs from 25 balls.
As the Firebirds began their chase, they faced an early setback with the loss of two key players, including Black Caps batters Tim Robinson and Rachin Ravindra, who fell for 0 and 1 respectively. Blundell did his best to make amends for his earlier blunder, scoring 63 runs off 37 balls and keeping the Firebirds in contention. With the team needing 23 runs from the last over, a spirited effort from Logan van Beek, who finished not out on 38 runs, brought them close. In the end, they could only manage a single off the final delivery, sealing their fate in a tight finish.
Women’s Match: Central Hinds Narrowly Defeat Wellington Blaze
In the women’s Super Smash match, the Central Hinds also secured a thrilling victory, defeating the Wellington Blaze by five runs. The Hinds set a target of 154-6, with standout performances from Bryony Smith and Grace Scrivens. Smith scored a brilliant 56 runs from 36 balls, while Scrivens added an essential 30 runs from 29 balls.
The Blaze’s response saw Rebecca Burns marking her 100th match with a commendable 56 runs off 52 balls. Despite her efforts, the team fell short, finishing at 149-5. Young seamer Jess Ogden delivered a memorable performance, taking her first wicket of the season by dismissing Australian star Ellyse Perry for just 14 runs.
Both matches showcased the competitive spirit and skill present in New Zealand’s domestic cricket, with the Central Stags and Central Hinds emerging victorious in their respective encounters, marking a successful day for the Central Districts teams.
