Christchurch Unveils $500 Million Parakiore Recreation Centre
Christchurch has officially inaugurated the Parakiore Recreation and Sport Centre, marking the completion of New Zealand’s largest recreation and sports complex. The opening ceremony took place on December 10, 2023, although the facility will welcome the public starting on December 17, 2023, following its co-hosting of the Special Olympics national summer games.
Facility Features and Financial Overview
The $500 million investment in the Parakiore complex has resulted in a state-of-the-art facility located on Saint Asaph St. This expansive centre features a 50-meter competition pool, dedicated dive pools, hydroslides, and various aquatic leisure zones, designed to cater to a wide range of recreational needs. Additionally, the centre includes nine indoor courts, which encompass a three-court show court equipped with retractable grandstands for spectators. There are also fitness and movement studios, as well as a training base for High Performance Sport New Zealand.
Originally budgeted at $246 million, funding for the project came from the city council and the Crown. The city council contributed $147 million, with the Crown providing the remaining funds. A spokesperson from Crown Infrastructure Delivery indicated in May that the overall cost of Parakiore was projected to reach approximately $500 million upon completion.
Community Impact and Upcoming Events
Before the public opening, the Parakiore centre will facilitate the Special Olympics national summer games from December 10 to 14, 2023. All events during these games will be free of charge, allowing the community to engage with and support the athletes. This initiative underscores the centre’s commitment to inclusivity and community involvement.
The Parakiore Recreation and Sport Centre aims to serve as a multifunctional hub for sports and recreational activities, providing diverse options for residents and visitors alike. Its completion is expected to have a significant positive impact on the local community, promoting health, wellness, and accessibility to sports facilities.
