Kiwi Player and Venus Williams Exited Early from ASB Classic

The ASB Classic in Auckland witnessed early exits for both New Zealand’s Monique Barry and American tennis icon Venus Williams on March 10, 2024. The tournament’s second day saw the elimination of Barry, the sole New Zealand representative in women’s singles, alongside Emma Navarro, the second seed, who also faced an unexpected defeat.

Monique Barry, ranked significantly lower than her opponent, Ella Seidel from Germany, struggled throughout the match. Barry, ranked almost 600 places below Seidel, lost in straight sets with a score of 6-2, 6-1. After the match, the emotional toll was clear as Barry expressed her frustration. “It was tough, I had to try to get in there and find my rhythm but it just didn’t happen,” she said, holding back tears. “I know my level, and it didn’t show today. I love playing here, but it just didn’t feel like anything was working, which is a little bit frustrating.”

Barry highlighted her desire to perform well for her home fans, stating, “The expectation of yourself, you’re representing New Zealand, especially with Lulu Sun being our number one. I want to follow in her footsteps.” Despite the setback, Barry remains committed to improving her game.

Similarly, Venus Williams, a seven-time Grand Slam champion aged 45, faced a tough challenge in her match against Magda Linette of Poland. Williams was granted a wildcard entry into the tournament but could not secure a victory, losing 6-4, 4-6, 6-2 in a tightly contested three-set match. Linette remarked on the intensity of the match, stating, “I managed to turn things around; I felt a bit sharper at the end. I just decided to step a little back and give myself more space against such a powerful hitter.” Williams also exited the doubles competition in the opening round alongside partner Elyse Tse.

On a more positive note, British player Katie Boulter advanced to the round of 16 after defeating Ukraine’s Yuliia Starodubtseva 6-3, 6-3 in her opening match. Boulter acknowledged the challenge posed by Starodubtseva but credited her new coaching strategy for the win. “I have a new coach. It’s going to take time; last year was tough, but for the first match of the season, I am very pleased,” she said.
