Liam Lawson Faces Criticism After Near-Miss with Marshals in Mexico
A near-miss incident involving driver Liam Lawson and two race marshals during the Mexican Grand Prix has drawn sharp criticism from Mexico’s motorsport federation. The incident occurred on October 30, 2023, while the race marshals were on the track clearing debris. Footage from Lawson’s on-board camera reveals that he came alarmingly close to the marshals as they crossed the track.
Following the race, Lawson expressed his disbelief at the situation. “I honestly couldn’t believe what I was seeing,” he stated. “I boxed and came out on a new set of hards, and then I got to turn one, and there were two dudes just running across the track. I nearly hit one of them. It was so dangerous, and, obviously, there’s been a miscommunication somewhere. I’ve never experienced that before.”
The incident has raised concerns about safety protocols within the sport. Lawson described the scenario as “pretty unacceptable,” highlighting that he had never encountered such a situation in his racing career. His comments underscore the importance of clear communication between drivers and race officials, especially in high-stakes environments like Formula 1.
Investigation Launched into Safety Procedures
In response to the incident, the Mexican motorsport federation has launched an investigation to assess the circumstances surrounding the near-miss. Officials are expected to review race footage, along with communication logs, to determine how the marshals ended up in harm’s way.
Safety in motorsport has been a critical issue, particularly since the tragic accidents that have marked its history. The federation’s swift action in launching an investigation reflects a commitment to ensuring that the safety of both drivers and officials is paramount.
Lawson’s near-miss incident adds to a growing list of safety concerns in the sport, especially regarding the protocols that govern how race marshals operate on the track. The federation’s findings could lead to changes in safety guidelines to prevent such situations in the future.
As the investigation unfolds, Lawson and other drivers will be awaiting the federation’s recommendations. The Formula 1 community continues to prioritize safety, hoping to avoid incidents that could jeopardize the wellbeing of everyone involved in the sport.
