Liam Lawson Raises Over $50,000 for Breast Cancer Research
Formula 1 driver Liam Lawson has successfully raised over $50,000 for breast cancer research through a charity event held at the Highlands Motor Park in Central Otago on October 3, 2023. The event attracted a large number of motorsport fans eager for the opportunity to experience thrilling hot laps with the renowned racer.
Organized by Josie Spillane, the event was inspired by her late friend, Louise Scott-Gallagher, who succumbed to breast cancer. Spillane expressed her gratitude for Lawson’s participation, stating, “Liam’s generosity in giving us his time helped us raise crucial funds for Breast Cancer Foundation NZ, ensuring her legacy continues to drive real change. We’re overwhelmed by the community’s support.”
Lawson showcased his driving skills in several high-performance vehicles, including the exclusive Aston Martin Vulcan—the only one in the southern hemisphere—and the Porsche GT3. The rides were made available during a silent auction that greatly contributed to the fundraising efforts. Notably, the hot laps in the Vulcan alone accounted for over $32,000 raised.
Craig Gallagher, Scott-Gallagher’s husband, praised Lawson’s involvement and the significant amount raised for the cause. “It’s impressive to see how much money was generated from this event,” he remarked.
Lawson expressed his enthusiasm for supporting the initiative, highlighting his long-standing connection with Spillane. “I can’t believe how many people were here, and how much money was raised for breast cancer,” he said.
Highlands Motor Park confirmed that all proceeds from the auction and donations would directly support the Breast Cancer Foundation NZ in its ongoing efforts in research, awareness, and patient support.
The charity event not only showcased the excitement of motorsport but also fostered a sense of community engagement, with participants coming together for a meaningful cause. As the day concluded, the contributions made by sponsors, bidders, and attendees reflected a unified commitment to raising awareness and funding for breast cancer research.
