Police React Positively to Fan Conduct After Kiwis-Samoa Match
The police reported a generally positive atmosphere following the rugby league match between the New Zealand Kiwis and Toa Samoa, which took place on March 10, 2024, at Go Media Stadium in Auckland. Although two fans were arrested and seven others summoned to court for driving-related offences, authorities expressed satisfaction with the overall behaviour of the attendees.
The highly anticipated match ended with the Kiwis narrowly defeating Toa Samoa 24-18. Following the game, hundreds of enthusiastic Samoa supporters gathered at Māngere Town Square, celebrating their team with flags, music, and dance. A photographer from the NZ Herald witnessed police intervening to have at least one supporter remove speakers from a vehicle’s roof as part of their efforts to maintain public order.
In their statement, police confirmed that “two arrests were made post-match” along with the issuance of summons for seven individuals. Police emphasized that they were “pleased with the behaviour of fans” despite some minor incidents being swiftly addressed.
Police Plan for Next Weekend’s Game
Looking ahead, police stated they would actively manage the upcoming game next weekend, both within the stadium and in surrounding areas. Authorities have reiterated their encouragement for fans to celebrate responsibly, especially after such a high-profile event.
As earlier communicated, police will be monitoring the stadium and the town centres that are known for celebrating league games. Officials stressed the importance of responsible drinking and having a safe plan for transportation after the event.
“We remind fans to drink responsibly, have a plan to get home safely, and be respectful to other fans, staff, and emergency services,” police officials stated. They assured the public that disorderly conduct would not be tolerated, with officers on hand to ensure everyone could enjoy the celebrations in a safe environment.
In conclusion, the match served not only as a thrilling sporting event but also as an opportunity for community celebration, with authorities working diligently to ensure a positive experience for all involved.
