Retired Rowing Enthusiast Excels in Global Indoor Challenge

After moving to Geraldine for retirement seven years ago, Hallberg found himself in search of purpose. Just a week after settling in, he stepped into the Freshchoice supermarket and applied for a job. Hallberg quickly realized he needed more than leisurely dog walks to fill his days, identifying himself as an “active relaxer.” This mentality propelled him into remarkable athletic achievements, including a standout performance in the 2025 World Rowing Virtual Series.

Global Competition and Outstanding Results

In the global rowing challenge that ran from June 1 to September 30, Hallberg achieved first place in his age group and ranked an impressive 77th overall among male competitors, surpassing many significantly younger than himself. The competition utilized the Concept2 indoor rowing machine, making it accessible to participants worldwide. Throughout the series, Hallberg faced four distinct monthly challenges, which he tackled from the comfort of Four Peak Fitness.

He described his initial performance as having “absolutely smashed” the first two challenges, though he noted that the latter two were “particularly difficult.” The third challenge required participants to increase their stroke rate by three strokes every three minutes, with strict penalties for missed precision. Despite the challenges, Hallberg’s resilience shone through.

A Legacy of Athleticism

Hallberg’s rowing accomplishments extend beyond this recent competition. He holds five New Zealand age group records and was the first New Zealander to deadlift over 1,000 lb (lifting 470 kg or 1,041 lb). His athletic journey includes competing in duathlons, where he secured first place in the New Zealand Masters Games and achieved 25th place at the World Triathlon Duathlon Championships in Edinburgh in 2010. He has also been an indoor rowing participant since 2005, recently finishing third in the 2024 World Indoor Rowing Champs.

In addition to his individual achievements, Hallberg served as a pilot for a tandem bike, assisting a vision-impaired female rider in her bid for the 2012 Olympics. His extensive athletic background has equipped him with insights he is eager to share with newcomers to rowing. He emphasizes that indoor rowing can help individuals burn more calories than running and advises beginners to focus on proper breathing and cadence.

“Don’t go hard out,” he cautions, explaining that approximately 70% of the effort should come from the legs. “Before your legs lock out, pull,” he advises, highlighting the importance of technique.

Hallberg attributes much of his success and motivation to his wife, Sue Hallberg, whose unwavering support has been a cornerstone of his athletic journey. “Sue has always given total support — whether it’s sport or work — which I’m thankful for,” he expressed.

As he approaches his eighth decade, Hallberg remains committed to fitness and well-being. He has learned to embrace a balanced diet, advocating for moderation in all things. His experience working in the produce aisle has even influenced his culinary preferences, humorously declaring his favorite vegetable to be chocolate.
