Silver Ferns Prepare for Taini Jamison Series Under New Interim Coach

The Silver Ferns have unveiled a squad of 14 players for the upcoming Taini Jamison Series against South Africa, which marks a significant transition for the team. Interim coach Yvette McCausland-Durie will lead the squad, stepping in for Dame Noeline Taurua, who was unexpectedly stood down last week. This is the first time in seven years that the national side will compete without Taurua’s guidance.

The three-Test series kicks off on September 24, 2023, in Auckland, with the Silver Ferns set to announce a match-day 12 one day prior to each game. Notably, a match-day captain and vice-captain will be appointed from the squad, a departure from the traditional single captaincy. This decision comes as Ameliaranne Ekenasio has opted out of the 2025 test window, leaving the leadership roles open to several players, including Karin Burger, Kelly Jackson, Kate Heffernan, and Grace Nweke.

McCausland-Durie expressed her anticipation for the series, noting, “The Taini Jamison Series is always a special occasion, and we’re excited to be welcoming South Africa back to New Zealand. They’re a world-class side and will provide exactly the kind of challenge we need as we continue to build.” She emphasized the squad’s balance and depth, highlighting the blend of experienced international players and newer talent.

The roster features a mix of established athletes and promising newcomers, providing an opportunity for players to showcase their skills on the international stage. Players not included in this series, such as Kate Burley, Tayla Earle, and Saviour Tui, may have a chance to represent the Silver Ferns during the Constellation Cup against Australia in October. Meanwhile, Amelia Walmsley is unavailable due to her commitments with the New Zealand Under-21 team competing at the 2025 Netball World Youth Cup.

Netball New Zealand has faced considerable scrutiny following the abrupt decision to stand down Taurua and her coaching team. In a statement, Matt Whineray, chairperson of Netball New Zealand’s board, indicated that discussions regarding proposed changes to the High Performance programme had not reached a resolution, prompting the decision to appoint an interim coaching team for this series.
