Venus Williams Surprises Fans with Doubles Entry at ASB Classic
Venus Williams has made a surprising addition to her participation in the 2026 ASB Classic, entering the doubles competition alongside top seed and world No. 14 Elina Svitolina. This unexpected pairing promises to be a highlight of the tournament, which takes place in Auckland. Williams, already a significant draw in the singles event, will now further engage fans with her presence on the doubles court.
Serendipitous Encounter Leads to Doubles Entry
The decision for Williams to compete in doubles came about through a chance conversation between Nicolas Lamperin, the tournament director, and Williams’s husband, Andrea Preti. While Williams was practicing on centre court, Lamperin spoke with Preti on the players’ balcony. Preti shared how he had encouraged Williams to play doubles at the 2025 US Open, a venture that turned out to be successful and well-received by the audience.
“He mentioned that the crowd really got behind her during that event,” Lamperin recounted. “Then he said if there’s any opportunity for her to play in Auckland, I’m sure she would consider it.” This prompted Lamperin to inform Preti about an available wild card for the doubles event, suggesting that they could arrange for her to team up with a player of her choice.
A Glamorous Pairing for Fans to Enjoy
Fans can look forward to a compelling dynamic as Williams partners with Svitolina. Both players bring a wealth of experience and talent to the court, heightening expectations for an exciting match-up. Their participation is expected to draw considerable attention, enhancing the overall appeal of the ASB Classic.
The tournament is scheduled to commence shortly, and this unexpected twist adds to the excitement surrounding the event. With Williams’s storied career and Svitolina’s current form, the doubles competition is poised to be a memorable highlight for attendees and viewers alike.
As preparations continue for the ASB Classic, the inclusion of such prominent athletes in both the singles and doubles draws ensures that fans will have plenty to cheer for in Auckland.
