Wānaka Teen Sam Harper Delivers Historic Double Century and Five-for
Sam Harper, a promising young cricketer from Wānaka, delivered an extraordinary performance in a club match on March 16, 2024. Competing for the Wānaka Cricket Club in the Koford Cup against Queenstown Coronet, Harper achieved remarkable milestones with both bat and ball, leading his team to a decisive victory in the Otago senior 40-over competition.
Harper’s day began with an explosive batting display where he scored an unbeaten 233 runs from just 126 balls. His innings included an impressive 25 fours and 14 sixes, showcasing a combination of power and precision. This outstanding performance not only marked a personal best for Harper but also contributed significantly to his team’s total of 342 runs for 6 wickets.
Dominant Bowling Performance
After his batting heroics, Harper continued to shine with the ball. He took 5 wickets for 1 run in just 3.5 overs, which included two maidens. His bowling dismantled Queenstown Coronet’s batting order, leading to a dramatic collapse. After a promising start at Luggate Cricket Ground, where they reached 148 runs without loss, Queenstown fell to 162 all out, handing Wānaka a comprehensive victory by 180 runs.
Harper, a Year 12 student at Mt Aspiring College, expressed his relief and excitement following this standout performance, especially after missing out on selection for the Otago U19 team earlier in the season. He demonstrated resilience and skill that not only earned him accolades but also highlighted his potential for future successes in cricket.
This match has set a new benchmark for club cricket in the region, with Harper’s double century and five-wicket haul drawing attention from local cricket enthusiasts and scouts alike. As Wānaka Cricket Club looks forward, Harper’s performance may well signal the emergence of a new star in New Zealand cricket.
