Five East Aucklanders Honoured for Exceptional Community Service
Five residents from East Auckland have been recognised in the 2026 New Year Honours List for their exceptional contributions across various fields, reflecting a commitment to community service, heritage preservation, and sports.
Lyn Lloyd’s Pioneering Work in Renal Dietetics
Lyn Lloyd, a resident of Somerville, has been appointed an Officer of the New Zealand Order of Merit (ONZM) for her outstanding services to renal nutrition. With over 40 years of experience in renal dietetics in both New Zealand and Australia, Lloyd has set national standards through her clinical care, education, and advocacy.
Her career began at Auckland Hospital in 1982, where she became a leading renal dietitian. Lloyd pioneered the introduction of long overnight hemodiafiltration in Auckland, the first programme of its kind in New Zealand. She has also contributed significantly to the development of a postgraduate Renal Nutrition Program designed for dietitians in nephrology, dialysis, and transplantation.
Lloyd’s influence extends internationally, collaborating on guidelines and academic publications, including the Australia and New Zealand CKD and transplant nutrition guidelines. Her extensive work has cemented her reputation as a leading expert in the field of renal nutrition.
Gary Whittle’s Lifelong Dedication to Rugby League
Gary Whittle, residing in Burswood, has been appointed a Member of the New Zealand Order of Merit (MNZM) for his remarkable service to rugby league. With over 65 years of involvement in various capacities, including referee and administrator, Whittle has made significant contributions to the sport in Auckland, Waikato, and Northland.
Since 1995, he has served as the timekeeper for Warriors games, having officiated at more than 500 matches. His commitment to rugby league extends to serving on the Auckland Rugby League Judicial Committee since 1981, where he currently chairs the committee. Whittle’s dedication to maintaining high standards in rugby league has earned him a Distinguished Service Award from New Zealand Rugby League in 2000.
Marin Burgess’ Role in Heritage Preservation
Marin Burgess, a resident of Farm Cove, has been awarded The King’s Service Medal (KSM) for her extensive work in heritage preservation and education. Since 1980, Burgess has volunteered at the Howick Historical Village, New Zealand’s largest living history museum, taking on multiple roles that have contributed to its success.
Her leadership within the Historical Society includes serving as president and overseeing significant projects during challenging periods, such as the Covid-19 pandemic. Burgess has played a vital role in educational programmes, ensuring that school children benefit from hands-on learning experiences. Her contributions to the community have been recognised through various awards, including the Founders Day award from Zonta of East Auckland.
Laurie Mills and Gordon Myer’s Community Engagement
Laurie Mills, a Sunnyhills resident, has received The King’s Service Medal (KSM) for his nearly 50 years of involvement in community theatre. As a vital member of the Howick Little Theatre, Mills has held numerous roles, including creative director and president, and has directed multiple productions that have enriched the local arts scene. His leadership efforts have significantly improved the theatre’s financial health and community engagement.
In Golflands, Gordon Myer has been awarded The King’s Service Medal (KSM) for his extensive volunteer work. His commitment spans various organisations, including the Red Cross and the Howick Lions Club. Myer played a key role in establishing the Clive Scouts group in the 1980s and has served as chairperson of the Manurewa Citizens Advice Bureau. His advocacy for youth projects and humanitarian efforts has made a lasting impact on the community.
These five individuals exemplify the spirit of service and dedication that enriches the East Auckland community. Their recognition in the 2026 New Year Honours List highlights the importance of local contributions in shaping a vibrant society.
