Julia Scheib Triumphs as Robinson Crashes Out in World Cup Giant Slalom
Austria’s Julia Scheib clinched her third victory of the World Cup giant slalom season on home snow, overcoming a challenging course to secure the win. Scheib, who aimed for consecutive giant slalom triumphs, found herself trailing after the first run but rallied to finish with an overall time of 1:56.46. Her performance came amid a dramatic race where many competitors struggled, including Robinson, the previous leader, who crashed during her opening run and did not finish.
The race took place in Austria, where the local crowd witnessed a series of spills, with as many as 19 skiers failing to complete the first run. This included Paula Moltzan, who seemed poised for a podium finish but crashed heavily on a turn. Fortunately, she was able to walk away after taking a moment to recover.
Scheib’s victory was not without tension. After the first run, Sara Hector of Sweden led with a time of 57.15 seconds, narrowly ahead of Scheib by just 0.02 seconds. However, during the second run, Scheib surged ahead, ultimately finishing 0.14 seconds faster than Camille Rast of Switzerland, who took second place. Hector’s second run left her in third, allowing Scheib to celebrate her achievement amidst the cheers of the home crowd.
Reflecting on her victory, Scheib expressed her surprise at the challenging conditions, stating, “It’s crazy, I never thought it would be the win. It was so tough, it was so bumpy, and I was so relieved when I came into the finish.” With this win, Scheib now leads Robinson by 88 points in the overall standings.
In contrast, Mikaela Shiffrin, the overall World Cup leader, had a less impressive outing, finishing eighth in the opening run. Despite this, she maintains a significant lead over Robinson, sitting 114 points ahead.
As the season progresses, Scheib indicated her desire to continue her success but also expressed a focus on the upcoming Super G events. “I want to continue like this, but I want to also focus a little bit on Super G. So we’ll see,” she noted.
With the World Cup giant slalom tour continuing, the competition promises to remain intense as athletes navigate both the technical challenges of the courses and the pressure of the standings.
